Japan is endlessly in need of new real estate.  The country has cut the tops off of mountains to extend shorelines or make islands (and airports).  If they allowed any planning effort in the cleanup will hope they're finding a productive use that will some day settle and be equally useful.

If not... well... it's hard to fill up the Pacific.

A massive floating garbage dump is headed towards the West Coast of the USA. They say it will take a couple years for it to arrive. Wish I could give you a reference but I'm sure Google will help.

No telling what might wash up ashore. It could get ugly.

My God, what destruction. This is not a smart ass question, but how do you remove a boat from the top of a building without destroying the building?

Big tornado.  They don't get names though I personally named this one Rachel (long story but it fits).

The large commercial store losses are rebuilt.  30-35% of the smaller business lost is reopened.  Lots of housing rehabilitated but much much more gone.  Lots of open space in that swath through the center of the city now.  It's still a dark zone at night.  My mom still gets lost driving through there because she's lost all her stores that were her landmarks.

The cleanup was very successful though.  There is still small debris areas of course.  And some housing and buildings mostly untouched and abandoned.  Civil condemnation will eventually claim them.  The city hasn't had time to get to that yet though.  But those are surprisingly few.

The schools that were lost haven't been cleared so quickly.  The structures that were deemed unsafe were allowed to be razed what you'd consider "quickly."  Just pushed over and hauled away.  Those deemed structurally secure, however, had a hold put on their razing for asbestos removal.  Work on the area for the new hospital began very recently also.  Though the old hospital is still a hollow wreck standing there with temporary chain link around it.  It's become the source of ghost stories.

Thank god for FEMA here.  The city and the State could never have afforded or so quickly managed the cleanup efforts.  It would still be a festering sore without the Federal support.

Japan was probably decades ahead of California in recycling because they lack natural resources that we Americans take for granted. (Not saying they are better.)

I'm not surprised that the plant life has regrown. When I was in Okinawa one of the first things I noticed was the army of civilian workers using weed eaters with saw blades trying to control the jungle growth that wanted to devour everything. Greenest place I've ever been to.

I wonder what effect the salt water has on the soil. Do they have to treat it with something to neutralize the salt? Looks like they are replanting.

Good for them that they are able to get through this.

Glad to hear that Joplin is making progress as well.
