Oil Consumption High!!
« on: February 13, 2012, 01:09:22 PM »

My 04 SE E-glide likes the oil. Bought used 3 years ago and later found out the valve guides had been replaced early on. Before my warranty ran out my local dealer worked on it and said, looked like it had been hot before. I bought a set of new stock pistons and they did the rest. Cleaned up the holes new rings ect. BUT I don't think they replaced the valve guides? Why wouldn't you do that when you did everthing else? Stiil using oil and gunking up the front plug some but not as bad as before. I'm not much of a gear head motor wise but could the valve guides be replaced without doing anything else? It doesn't smoke or leak but uses at least 3 Qts of oil ever 5000 miles. Running synthetic. Any Ideas on this?

The valve stem seals are famous (infamous?) for oil consumption issues, so that's one possibility.  Before throwing parts at it, however, I'd try to determine if the oil is getting into the combustion chamber from the top end or the bottom.  Just because they put new pistons and rings in it doesn't mean you can automatically assume the rings are sealing properly.

You could do a leakdown test and compression test to try and determine if it's valve guides/seals or piston rings leaking.  I had a couple of 04 SEEG's in the past, and I had to replace the valve guides/seals in both motors due to oil consumption/plug fouling.  Replacing the guides/seals resolved the issue both times...

Was told today by tech at local dealer that one quart of use in 1,000 miles is considered "within spec's" for HD.

That's Crazy! So if you changed your oil and added 5 qts between oil changes, they think that wouldn't be exsessive? I'd have to call Harley on that one!!

My experience is about a quart every 3000 miles.  Been about that on all of my Harley's.

My 2012 used no oil in the first 5000 miles. Now I'm up to 6000 so I'll see if that changes.

Replace the valve-guides, and use 20W-50 HD Oil.  ;) Synthetic is junk, IMO.  >:( Later--HUBBARD

That's insane...the MOST one should consume between 5K oil changes is 1 quart, IMO.  Otherwise, something ain't right.  Of course, there's no need to run a HD motor at the full line all the time either...a lot of them just blow 1/2 quart into the intake or out the air cleaner when it gets saturated, and "like" to be run 1/2 quart down.

We hear the "1 qt in 3000" or so mile words, here as well.
That is what Panheads comsumed/leaked, over 50 years ago.
No real good reason for these bikes, to have that type of comsumption.
