Permatex Thread repair
« on: February 24, 2012, 05:52:25 PM »

Anyone out here ever use Permatex thread repair epoxy, with any success??  The long 1/4-20 blot that holds on the inspection cover on the side of the outer primary...the piece that is part of the inner primary has stripped out...looked at Heli-coiling it...then saw and artical on the epoxy thread restorer...any feed back will appreciated

Stay away from epoxy thread repairs, especially where there is heat or oil involved.  Epoxy is just glue. Don't "glue" your bike to repair it.  Now duct tape and baling wire are proven repair techniques here in the south!  :bananarock:

I agree...thread inserts are better...harder to do sometimes but they last...next time remember to use a torque wrench!

Take it from me, a tool and die maker, don't fool with it, just helicoil it and be done with it. You will be tearing it down constantly as the vibrations will be cracking and breaking the compound and letting the bolt come loose.

You sure you mean "inner primary" for the hole that stripped?  Or is it a bolt hole for a bolt that holds the inspection cover to the outer primary cover?  When you're mentioning both "long bolt" and "inspection cover" I'm confused.

In either case the threaded insert recommendations are appropriate.  Only mentioning it again to suggest one thing.  There is a competitive product called Keysert that can be had in a thinner walled version than the common Helicoils.  If your repair spot is a place where you're concerned there's not enough meat left to make the repair the thin walled Keyserts are worth checking out.

If I understand correctly, one of the holes for the four 1/4-20 bolts holding the primary chain inspection cover is stripped.  I would suggest that while it may be possible under ideal conditions to temporarily repair the hole with the Permatex epoxy, you will be much better off to just use a helicoil or a threaded insert.  Those products usually result in a stronger thread than the original.  And the thread is actually in the outer primary cover, not the inner.

If you are talking about a different fastener, please identify it on the attached drawing.

Thanx for some of your comments...the bike in question is actually my softail, it has the oblong style inspection cover....behind the cover at ...12o'clock and 3 o'clock as you face the bike from the side, the bolts at those positions are around 2 1/2" long and the primary was two stantions that come out from the inner primary and mate to the outer primary cover, and the long 1/4 -20' s go through them and actually have a gasket type material that sits between the outer cover and the stantions. the bolts at 6 and 9 oclock are only about a half inch long, and they thread into the outer cover.
While I appreciate your interest and suggestions, the question still remains the same....does anyone have any EXPERIENCE using this Permatex products???  If I was looking for just opinions, I could ask my wife...she's always full of them (LOL)....as to the suggestion of maybe now I should remember to use a torque wrench, this bike has over a 140 thousand on it...stuff wears and strips over time , this is a daily rider, not 2012 hardly ridden garage ornament that goes to the stealer for its repairs
thanx Jerry for taking the time to post diagram. Of primary drive, I do appreciate your trying to help,

Apologies for the failed attempt at assistance.

Yes.  I have used chemical thread repair methods before.  Never successfully over the long or medium term in an environment that was not quiet and stable.  So, for that matter, did the construction company working for the city of Boston hanging panels over the underground roadway in the "Big Dig" project a few years ago.  In case we don't remember how well that worked the panels starting falling from the ceiling and killing people as they crushed the cars below.

I used the thread repair on a 350 Bowtie exhaust bolt and ran it for 4 yrs until I sold the car with no problems. Can't think a Harley would get hotter than that, but don't know for sure. The only way I would do it on my scooter would be last chance.

That stuff is a temporary fix at best. Also unless you get it completely clean it won't adhere to the surface anyway.

If it was my bike this is my opinion, It is a $40,000 bike why not spend 3 or 4 hundred to fix it right and have no worries.

I've used it on high vibration equipment at work... the threads hold, but make sure the surface is of course free of dirt, oil, etc.....

However, seeing as this part will be subject to oil bath, that may not be a good choice.

Click here to read instructions. If you have further questions you can contact Permatex Technical Service at 1-87-Permatex (1-877-376-2839) Monday – Friday 8am-5pm.

since you obviously dont appreciate the opinions of those who commented...this option may be your best bet.  as far as your comment about using a torque wrench..if that had been done every time the fastener was put in it most likely would still be functional since improper, over tightened or under tightened fasteners will cause premature failure, not an OPINION but FACT.
