Gas cap dissassembled
« on: March 12, 2012, 05:41:22 PM »

Hi guys,

short trip up to Daytona. More experience on my wet riding skills.  ;)

During the trip, my gas cap came apart. What I mean is the cap diassembled itself with the spring and the metal part for the bottoom of the cap coming off the cap casing. I can still use the cap but now it is not one piece which is not as I would like. Anyone have this experience? Comments welcome.

PS: I needed to fill up (average 3 gallons each time) for the trip of 270 miles one way. I figure about 32 miles per gallon at about 80 mph average on my springer.

Checked Harley Davidson.com for a replacement part. Searching for new parts, I did not find the same product but did find a lot with different logos. THe part most similar comes with the left side fuel indicator. Hope I don't need to get the kit. That costs $169.

Ebay troll also did not find one. Heading off to the dealer I suppose. I will also look at the root cause of the problem and see if it is repairable. Seal is fine and only a minor hassle, mostly with gas fingers...

Carl, the gas cap that came with your bike is part number 62825-06A. The following year that part number was replaced by 62825-06B.  How much you want to bet the reason for the design and number change was the situation you have?

Anyhow, you don't need to order a kit, you can just order the 62825-06B.  It's not cheap, I think they ask around $60 for it, but at least that beats buying the entire kit.

Hey Carl,

What Jerry said.
The catalog does not show the cap as a separate item but I have replaced two and my wife one.

I know this is an old post but here's an update. Magically, the gas cap reassembled itself while it was seated and seems to be intact now. Go figure...

:beatdeadhorse: Hello Carl & Everyone else,

I'm on my 3rd design, 2 upgrades.  Look at your gas cap.
You will find a date (white lettering), on the black polymer
just below the chrome cap. My bike is in winter storage
miles away.  The latest design from Germany (as they all
are) has a late 2012 date on it as I remember (which is
difficult at times).  If you have the second (2) issue, you
will experience an expansion upon the polymere lips that
hold the large thin (O-ring) in place. I lost my O-ring some
time ago do to the expansion. I believe it's there to keep
the fuel from coming out when the bike is on its side. You
will eventually experience the Cap not rising up from the
spring load. You can do one of two things at this point.

1) Grind down that lip just enough to allow for movement.
Don't forget to mask the underside of the Chrome Cap
before the grind.  If you use a file it may take several
fittings to accomplish because of the polymer.

2) Replace the Cap.
