I have used the rear footpegs folded up.  For the Front, I try to use the frame at the crossbrace.  I also use a Condor Chock that helps a lot.

Please look at how the "factory" ties them down! Look at posts from SSB on his
new SERGC. My stealer always uses the crash bars, just like the factory!

We just brought back a new SERGU from NC, to WI the same way..........No problems!

Just saying!!!

Taz

Looking at the pic that Chip posted above, it looks like the factory also goes straight to the frame at the cross brace.

The chock on the front wheel makes a huge difference.  If nothing else, you can fashion one from three pieces of 2X4...4X4 is even better.

guys, I have to pick up a new bike and transport it.  If I get a 5'9" trailer (U-Haul), how do I get the bike in and out and how do I tie it down.  Do I need a wheel chock?  Is there something better I should rent.  I can not locate a motorcycle trailer from any of the rental places.  BTW, I am in Mass going to NJ.  Thanks

A 8' bike in a 5'9" trailer is a accident waiting to happen.

If thats the trailer I'm thinking of, I used one with short mesh steel walls, there are tie down rings in each corner that you can use. A strap from each of the front corners of the trailer to the handlebars, with the front tire pressing against the front wall. Then another strap over the seat, put a folded towel or something between the strap and seat, or through the rear wheel, again towel is a good idea. Its not ideal, but I moved 600 miles that way.

OK thanks. I may just suck it up and do the ride.  Back and forth will be 10 hours.  A little concerned about the break in process.  Dont want to run her at same RPM on trip home.  Anyway, dealer called me and told me that the bike is in and being prepped.  Ruby Red!!   :orange: :2vrolijk_21:

Any tips on tying down for a 6 hour ferry trip ? Won't be able to use a wheel chock on the front & certainly not letting the ferry company tie it down ! Definateley have to get some soft ties though.  :cucumber:

RETHINK that strap across the seat deal. That does nothing, serves absolutely no purpose except to wear the seat from abrasion with the strap. Bike can fall all the way over, either way. Nothing is hurt by compressing the forks a little, and the rear is secured to keep bike from going side to side in advent of a impact to trailer or a large bump. Anyone remember the episode of OCC where they were to smart to tie the rear, then hit a glancing blow on a guard rail? Bike hit the wall in trailer and bent fdr and damaged paint. They acted supprised.
Pingel has a visual on there webpage showing correct way/angles to tie a large bike down. Also towing without a chock, Pingel, BikePro, Condor or whatever is a accident waiting to happen.

I tie the kick stand forward to the left crash bar so that the stand cannt move. Strap around the front brake lever so that front brake is on. And some bubble wrap or sleeping bag on the saddle and over the side panels before the ferry people put their pad on the saddle to protect the saddle from their tie down rachet strap. Ive never had any prob;lems with the ferry guys strapping down, just that I am right beside them when they are doing it. Might be worth while bringing a few ratchet straps to tie down to the deck fixtures by wrapping the strap around the lower bike frame as a precaution. Put the alarm into Transport Mode (I keep forgetting how to do that !) to avoud alarm going off.  Enjoy the trip.  :jalapeno:

1. thats why I said put something between the strap and seat. 2. it compresses the rear shocks so the bike is less likely to "hop" when going over bumps. I've never damaged a seat doing this, but if one's not comfortable with it, dont.

Glad I'm not the only one who forgets how to do this ! Carry a card in my wallet with instructions how to do this !

Good tip on tieing the side stand, cheers for that Peter  :cucumber:

Nice one Paul. I forgot that too. Probably should do that while it's on the ship too. Thanks
