Replacing HD bulbs with new high intensity bulbs

To all CVO Ultraglide owners:

Replaced the stock HD bulbs in 20 minutes with the following PIAA bulbs.  Page 197 of the manual explains how to replace the bulbs without removing the fairing.  Was very easy.  The trim piece has four mounting locations, two top and two on the bottom.  Snaps in and out.  Be careful not to scratch the paint.

PIAA 70476 Super Plasma GT-X Anti-vibration H4 Bulb from the following link.

http://www.amazon.com/dp/B000TK5SGW/ref=pe_175190_21431760_cs_sce_3p_dp_1

The bulbs are remarkable.  Nice Bluish tint on low and extreme white on high.

I know Sylvania Extreme Whites are popular but they won't last 6000 miles (or at least mine didn't).  Sylvania publishes a 150 hours life expectancy.  Not very long.

The PIAA's are "anti-vibration" and come with a one year warranty.  Pricey but we will see.  I carry one of the old bulbs as a spare.

So DB how much better are these than stock?
How much further does the light show? Is the light beam wider?
Just rode the 12 SERG at night for the first time.
LED's for a Roadglide can't come to soon.

I agree.  I wanted a set of LED lamps(should have come with the bike) but I guess that is out in the future.  I ride in the Texas Hill country at night on back roads.

The low beams have a very distinct pattern that is at least 75 feet further down the road.  A lot.

The high beams are very impressive.  Wide pattern and much further down the road.  At over 70mph, I never felt like the lights were a limiting factor.  Much better.  Hope they last.  Road an Ultra with the LED and what a huge difference.  But then again only one main light.

Time will tell.

Unfortunately, it doesn't seem to be getting rave reviews from the consumers.  "not the best longivity", "not the best lighting", etc.   :nixweiss:  Not sure I'd invest $70 for two bulbs, based on those reviews, so will be very anxious to hear how you fare with them.

Charlie, I have the h4 Piaa in my 04.  I've had it in ther for 2 years now.   Big difference over stock and lasts.  In still have that bike and have piaas in the passing lamps also.  They work great for me.

Read the same reviews.

All I can say is they are a great improvement.

My buddy uses the Sylvania Extreme Whites.  The PIAA's are as brighter if not more.

He replaces the Sylvania's at least once a year.

Time will tell.

I just got these the other day:  http://www.motorcyclehidlights.com/harley-davidson-road-glide-hid-lights-c-71_137/digital-hid-kit-slim-ballasts-p-209

Haven't installed them yet, but looks to be plug and play.  My intent is to install them without removing the fairing, instead removing the headlight assembly from the front...should be plenty of room to work.

Call me stupid if you like but I like my garage door opener that came with the bike. I've read the thread on the HIDS about adding the flash to pass module but then you're adding another $60 to the cost of the HIDS. I run HIDS in my truck and my wife's truck and love them but not willing to lose the GDO just yet. Although, I'm thinking if you power the HID ballast from the battery and use low beam headlight wire as a "trigger" on a relay this might also cure the problem.

Just to bump this back up. Last week a buddy and I were out at night on the bikes. He has a red SERGU.  We noticed my lights were so much brighter than his. I finally remembered to look at them. With just looking at the bulbs through the housing I can read PIAA 55w on mine. Looks like the PO already did an upgrade on the lights for me. They sure kick the snot outta the stock bulbs.
