Crap, I spent all of that time typing  my response, only to be beat to the post by Firedood and Spyder. Shucks, I guess I will have to take typing lessons.

Nonetheless, it was a good post.  [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif]  And all of it is true.  We proved that with several of our bikes.  [smiley=toilet.gif]

I have a SE Road King ordered and will get it in March. I read how CVO's are not so "special" anymore. I know when you buy a $40,000 custom, you are lucky to get $25,000 for it one year later. Maybe it would be better to buy a "regular" Harley and totally customize it-truely make it unique?
dps4,

'd00d, Spiderman, and Ace have all given you excellent reasons why, assuming you want all the things that come with a CVO, buying the CVO is a better idea than adding the same items yourself.  Doing it yourself will cost more.  Using the '05 SEEG as an example, the MSRP was about $10k over the MSRP of an E-Glide Custom.  If you add up the retail prices of all the CVO parts (engine, wheels, chrome everything, lowered suspension, paint job, etc.), and add labor charges, a homemade CVO would cost more unless you're really good at selling all your take-off parts for top dollar.  Another issue is insuring your "custom" bike.  You will need to disclose all of your changes and get added-cost riders on your insurance. If you don't, and you suffer a total loss, your insurance company will base the claim on the book value of the original model as identified by the VIN, and your investment in customizing will be lost. This is a non-issue with a CVO bike.  When I got the price quote on my SEEG, I questioned the agent twice to make sure he understood I was talking about a $30k+ CVO, and he was fully aware of what it was.  I was pleasantly surprised at the rate, and the fact that everything was covered without special accessory riders (also included a two year full replacement coverage for theft or total loss).

I thought long and hard about this same idea before I bought the SEEG - my plan was to buy an Ultra (solid black, my favorite color), have the engine built to at least 100 torque and hp, add the chrome wheels and various other goodies.  When I figured the approximate tab, I was looking at about $29k with no paint.  Assuming market conditions similar to those of the past 10 years, when I decided to sell or trade after a few years, it would be worth significantly less than the SEEG.

Only if you plan on keeping it for a long time. When you go to sell or trade any Harley, the value is based on original MSRP, not on how much you have spent on upgrades. If you spend $22000 on a new stock Ultra and then make it a custom by adding, let's say $11000 on paint, motor upgrade, chrome, etc. , then you have $33,000 invested. When you go to sell or trade it, then the bank is going to look in the blue book and it is still a base ultra and it will be worth about the original MSRP of $22000 less at least $1000 per year depreciation.
So if you keep your $33000 "custom" ultra for 2 years, you will be lucky to get $19000 for it ( a loss of $14000 in 2 years!). The ONLY way you might not lose big is if you can find someone with cash to burn that doesn't really care about the resale value and just has to have your "custom" bike.

A CVO bike (if kept stock--HA-HA) will depreciate based on it's original MSRP (which already includes all the extras that you have to add to the base model Ultra). So in two years an '07 CVO SE Ultra w/ original MSRP of $33,500 should only lose about $3000 or so in value. You will still lose most of the money you might invest in upgrades to the CVO just like  you do on any other Harley.

So unless you just can't live without a one of a kind bike, or you have money to burn, then the CVO is a much better value and retains its value much better than a "CVO wanna-be"

Just my opinion, for what it's worth.

For those that can afford the one of a kind bikes, more power to you. ;D ;D

I have done it bought a HD Stock and chromed it and did the engine mod's and put everything on it in the HD wish book and rolled out of the dealers costing much more than I paid for the CVO, The CVO has more on it the main thing that sold me on the ULTRA I have is the Color If you were to get a stock HD and have it painted from the color shop in the wish book you can add 5K just for the paint if you could get it. Before you even start adding chrome or getting the stock motor to 103.

The CVO is that to me !  I liked the color and it came pre-blinged for me  [smiley=huepfenjump3.gif] After all is said and done it's just a moptorcycle to be ridden and enjoyed. I didn't buy it to resell it for a profit if it goes as all my other stuff has it will be worthless when I'm through with it as it should be. [smiley=soapbox.gif]

I'll have to say...it's kind of upsetting to see all the bashing.  Obviously most have lost or forgotten the main benefits of the CVO (from Road Glide on).  Performance (big motors), styling and paint.  Keep in mind...CVO takes these bikes to market in one year.  They're small niche teams that develop, test and bring it to reality.

It seems we've all become numb to the basics.  If you doubt me...go throw your leg over a vivid black TC88 compared to your 103's or 110's and see if you can step backwards.  It's hard and I doubt any of us would like to step back into those days.  To take a vivid black bike and create even the same paint set on an Ultra would be difficult with 11-14 passes at 5k.  At least one of similar quality as HD puts out unless you have a buddy willing to do it for beer   [smiley=drink.gif] after hours.

Goodies.  Yes, our bikes are loaded up with them.  These goodies become a big staple for HD.  There are a lot of folks that can't afford our bikes right off the bat.  Lets face it...a LOT of people would LOVE to own one of our bikes but can't due to the $$.  But...they DO see some cool accessories that we have on our bikes and run to the catalog and add it to their bike just so they have some of the creature comforts we have.  When I park the CVO I almost have to run away from it.  Why?  Because everyone that doesn't have one wants to talk to me about it.  That should make all of us proud to ride one although the wifey sometimes gets mad when we're trying to get somewhere.

Exclusitivity...you know...more and more of these bikes are going over seas as well.  They have also upped the color options.  Remember when ONE color and maybe two were the norm?  Now we have 3 and you can pick and choose which one you want because that's your favoriate color.  Obviously we've forgotten the days where an orange SEEG   [smiley=pumpkin.gif] was the only option you had because they quit making the black/purple ones last week!    >:(

So keep in mind...we are ambasadors to the MOCO weather or not you want to believe it.  Weather or not you want to belive it, the MOCO listens to us.  We make suggestion...they typically listen.  Yes, it may not be within "your" time frame.  But there IS a lot of testing that needs to be done on everything.  The MOCO isn't like OCC where they get out the hammer and slap something together in order to do a one off bike.  (ever see OCC use a torque wrench???)  How long have we yelled, kicked and screamed for a 6-speed?  So, they came up with a kit to add to the 5 speed.  Now, all of 07's have the tranny from the factory stock with a 2 year warranty.  Ever think that maybe the TC88 didn't have enough UMPFF to drive the 6-speed except on flat surfaces with a good wind behind you???  There's a lot of downshifting that goes on with a stock TC88 and 6 speed.  Now with the TC96, they can drive the 6-speed like it should be driven.

CVO is the group that leads the way.  Take a look at how it revitalized the Road Glide in the OE platform.  We've gotten the Road King Custom and Street Glide basically from what the CVO group has come up with and now the OE group has picked up the Screamin Eagle V-rod.

Quality has gone up.  WAY UP from what it was.  Can it get better...sure.  I think their experience shows they are striving at that.

Ok, I'll get off the soap box now.  I'm proud to ride a CVO.  Still a great site and some great points made here.

Cheers,
J [smiley=drink.gif]

I did not start this out for bashing...but as an observation that I have to say you did little to dispell.

and regarding Quality???   Take a look at my paint job and tell me quality, then hear what I heard said by the Quality Inspection person on the CVO line (she could NOT reject because of cloudy mismatched paint)... unless you are comparing to AMF days...IMHO, Quality has gone DOWN over the recent years.

Hey, don't you know that HD spent several thoundand hours of blood sweat and tears and several millions of dollars in reasearch, testing, and development of those one of a kind unique spectacular "milky" mismatched cloudy paint schemes??? Then a few people that didn't like them had to complain, and HD replaced these one-off spectacular paint jobs w/ tins that had the regular old bright and shiny matching paint!!! What a waste!!!! ;D ;D ;D

I'm not bashing anyone's bike nor the waiting game and no, I'm not joking.  Fired00d waited 9 months.  Glad you got the color you wanted d00d and a good choice of colors it is!   [smiley=pumpkin.gif].  HD colors all the way!  You don't have to wait that long now with the cycling through the colors more often now days.  I'm simply stating that I believe the folks in CVO are doing a great job  [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif].  They're listening and making changes.  Granted, it might not be as fast as we'd like to see.  Our bikes have more goodies on them now and better performance right out of the box.  Also, if the quality has gotten worse, then why make the purchase?  Yes, there are going to be problems at times.  No one is perfect.  Even Rolls Royce has a service department and ask the guy that has one in the shop and he'll probably have a similar response.  I DO know folks that purchased a CVO of a different color vs. the color they really wanted because it was the only one the dealer was getting and if they didn't buy it, they were SOL.

Keep the wind in your face,  8-)
