I think the ideal solution would be to miniaturize the circuits and battery of the fob and then have it implanted under your skin.  No more chance of riding off without it.  Of course, the battery changes might get to be a PITA (or wherever you had it implanted).

I'm just the idea guy, I'll leave it up to the rest of you to work out the details.

Every time I read one of these threads it reminds me why I prefer the manual button fobs to the current fully automatic versions.

I have an 09 and was having trouble getting the fob to turn off the alarm so I checked the battery.  Both batteries in my fobs were getting very low.  So I checked the batteries in my 03, which is the manual button fob, and they were still above rated voltage.  It seems to me that the new type fobs will run the battery down much faster as it has to continuously emit a signal for the bike's alarm system to pick up.  I'd prefer the old style too so if I turn it off, it stays off and the battery won't run down nearly as fast.

How often should the battery be replaced?

The manual states to change them every 12 months. Trust me on this do it now, then change them on an 8 month schedule because once that fob battery goes dead it gets really annoying having to enter your override code (you did program one right?) to start the bike and even then the alarm system can act funky.

Yes I had BOTH fobs die within the first 8 months, went to start the thing, alarm starts blaring -- enter the dang code -- after pulling out the wallet card with the directions -- finally the alarm shuts off, bike starts, casual observers are wondering what my problem is, some laughing, some scowling - heck I was wondering what my problem was it took me so long to get the bike going -- So now I'm keeping fresh batteries in the tourpack (I figure on buying an extra pair every time I change them) and then I can change them at the first sign of trouble.

How often should the battery be replaced?

Just replaced the battery in my "main" fob after 2 years and 3 months.  Did it when I was in Daytona, as I thought it would be durned inconvenient to have it die there.  My 2nd fob has had a piece of paper below the battery for most of it's life.

Make sure you buy fresh batteries from a major brand name.  Some of the crap passed off these days might not have enough juice to keep you going a month.  And I wouldn't assume the stuff at a Harley shop is fresh.

In theory, when using good fresh batteries a yearly change should be sufficient.  I think having a spare battery stashed on the bike is a good idea, just in case.

Good ideas. Think I'll go get some extras. You know it costs me at least a hundred dollars a day to stay on this forum. Too much good info and products.

Thanks for the tip about the app GK. I can never remember how to use the PIN when I need it. Hopefully I can remember the PIN number too!  ???

Even if you have your fob with a fresh battery in it, there's no guarantee that you won't need your PIN and the instructions for how to use it. My BSR and I were refueling at a Shell station near the Harley dealer in Reno one year and our alarm kept going off when I tried to restart the bike. We both had fobs with good batteries in our pockets too. There was some kind of radio frequency interference in the station that blocked our fobs. I ended up pushing the bike about 30 or 40 feet to get it out of the interference, and then it was happy again.

Some Petro Canada gas stations in Canada do the same thing. You have to push the bike out from under the canopy  at the station with the alarm howling before it starts. :2vrolijk_21:

If I start up my FLTRUSE without my FOB on the alarm starts going off like there is no tomorrow. Believe me I never drive off W/O, just can't.

Does anyone know if the siren can be simply disabled?  I know the chirp function can be turned off, but it would be nice if the siren can be muted if not needed.

This may sound silly, but I do not know anything about a "pin" :nervous: :nervous:

I recommend that you get the manual out and look up the security system and how to set and use a personal code.  Learn how to set a code, then actually set one, and then use it to deactivate the security system a few times to make sure you can do so when and if it becomes necessary.  Look in the manual for the little tear out card that has the instructions on it and a place for you to write down the code, fill it out, and place it in your wallet.  This could be the difference between still being able to ride when your fob gets lost or dies, and walking or hanging out somewhere waiting for a road service call.

As far as I know, the siren can be disconnected completely.  It used to be a separate optional component, and the security system would still do it's thing to imobilize the bike if you didn't have the optional siren installed.  Be aware that the siren also has an internal battery, so that if a thief were to cut a battery cable the siren would still operate.

If you just want to reduce the volume, I guess you could wrap it a few times with that all purpose wonder product, duct tape. ;)
