The deer around here aren't that big.  You want a corn fed deer, not a pine fed deer. 
The elk around here are great though.  Pringle is the elk capital of South Dakota.  It's 13 miles down the road from where I live.  They have a group of locals called the Pringle Poachers.  I'll let you guess from that name what happens to alot of the elk.  Your .308 would be perfect.

yeah, .30 cal would be rather large for that deer... 

I was only kidding, I couldn't shoot a deer like that - not only would my kids murder me, the damn thing is too cute.

I'll keep to killing anonymous deer - moving to VA this year, there are TONS of deer on Quantico.

Yup...plenty of MP's also ..... caught a 15 day "vacation" for shooting a couple of frickin' squirrels .... ('course it was around midnight)  :2vrolijk_21:
