How Can I view a saved route in my Road tech 660
« on: March 21, 2012, 11:01:20 PM »

Hey CVO'ers,

I would love to be able to export a saved route from my GPS (one that I took today and loved) and be able to look at it on a map on my computer.  I tried the "Trip Planner" on the HD website....and there are functions to allows for this very thing.  When I saw it....I thought.."perfect"....but when i tried to view the route it was not a route at all.  The GPS has it saved as "current route" but can't seem to get it out of the GPS.

Does this make sense?  If so can anyone help?

Thanx in advance,

Cheers,

Jeff

I think what you would have to do is first, create the waypoints in the GPS and save them as 'favorites' so that you can then build the 'route' in your GPS. Once the waypoints are in there, you can create and save it as a route.

Although the GPS will essentially 'track' your travels... it doesn't exactly save that ride for any future purposes.

If you can remember the key points along the way, you should be able to pick them from the map view and then build the route to be saved.

At least that's how I do it for rides up here that I haven't completed more than twice.

For my trip to Texas this Summer, I simply used Microsoft's Streets/Maps/Trips (whatever it's called) planner to build the waypoints on my computer at 200 mile intervals and used the cities at those stops to plug into the GPS as Waypoints.  Once everything was established in the GPS, I saved each day's ride as a Route.  The 200 mile interval was for Gas Mileage only, as I plan to get anywhere between 500 and 700 miles in each day.  Would like to take a little more time... but my leave balance doesn't want to participate.   8)

Okay, as I often do... I went back and re-read your original post.

I've never tried to export a route from my GPS so that it can be viewed on my computer so all that I typed above is more than likely something you already know... sorry.

I've had the Microsoft program for so many years I can't even remember what it's actually called... but I start with it and then manually transfer the necessary information into my GPS... even though the software has the ability to transfer the information directly to the GPS.  The software supports many GPS units, and I know that it supports Garmin, as I've actually used it in the laptop while traveling in the Tahoe, connected to another Garmin I own to physically show my position using the software... kind of nerdy I know, but it was just something to pass the time.   8)

You can run the software that came with your GPS on your laptop.  Map Update, and Map Install do exactly what they say - update the map on your GPS.  Your allowed 1 free upgrade in the first 60-90 days to your GPS map.  You have to set up an account on Garmin.com and work your way through the menus.

There is a separate program called MapSource.  This will synch with your GPS unit and provides a fully functional interface.  You will be able to tab through saved maps, look at rabbit trails of every time the GPS is started and the routes you go on while in a non-navigation mode.  I like this a lot for when some one else is leading, and I like the route they go.  I can then make a custom route based from my house.

The MapSource allows you to import/export routes to your GPS, etc.  This is the best way to make a new route, and send it back to your unit.

Hope that helps a bit - if you lost your disk, you can download the programs from Garmin again.  My Disk didn't have the Unlock Code with it, but once I registered my unit, they sent me the code that would get my software working.  Their e-mail customer support was very responsive - less than 24 hours on a business day.

Good Luck!!
