A friend of mine swears that if you add 1qt of Harley 60wt and 3qts of Amsoil when you change oil, your "tappits" will quiet down, and the top end of the motor will also become very quiet, almost like the top end of a Honda!
It's true! he swears!

If you want quiet tappets, get a set of HQ Black Ops lifters... you can't even hear them...

AMSOil is the best oil out there - bar NONE.  BTW - the MoCo STILL uses the CRAP INA caged cam bearings. These bearings have a long and well-documented history of failing regularly. It was the same back in the Evo days... ever since the MoCo went to the caged cam bearings.  Torrington full-complement bearings cost all of $10 APIECE.

But failures of major H-D engine components usually have little to to with the oil used - because oil only provides lubrication, and all oils can do THAT fairly well. The newer H-D pressed-together crankshafts may have their manufacturing process benefits - but they are not nearly as good as the older style crankshafts that were made to be "tuned" in the field. And the very complex dual-chain camshaft mechanisms of our Twin-cam engines are far more likely to fail than the very simple Evo-style single-cam configurations that were driven via a single pinion gear right off of the crankshaft. The more parts there are - the more things there are that can go WRONG...

Agree 100% except you have the oil ranking slightly incorrect.  Red Line is #1.

Actually, I challenge you to prove who is # 1.  Amsoil, Red Line, Mobile 1.  I will take any of them any time against anything else.

Ok, lets start an oil thread.   Oh just shoot me  :nixweiss:

Total and Unbelieveable BS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
1st: Call Harely Davidson and Offically report this. Get case numbers etc......

2nd: Officially ask the dealer and Harely to provide you with a written response as to why Harely puts Synthetic in their CVO bikes.

3rd: Officially ask Harely for a scientific comparison on the the two oil brands.

4th: Call Amsoil and get their Official response to their oil causing engine failures.

5th: Document! Document! Document!

Let us know who the dealer is so we can stay as far way as we can from them

Excellent advice, follow it!

I agree that oil usually gets a bad rap in cases of inferior parts that are not holding up under any oils components. That's as scientific as I can get.

Ahhh, hey Mike, I think you need to organize an intervention for this "friend".

btw, while his theory is obvious BS, I can assure you that one cup of finely ground saw dust added to any brand and weight motor oil will indeed make your Harley extremely quiet.  This is scientific fact.

Sawdust and epm grease work great for leaky transmissions..

Magnuson–Moss Warranty Act...up to HD to prove it...in warranty or out...Have you lawyer send them a note.

It's an 09 so may not be a case of denied warranty.  Might simply be out of warranty and a case of another dealer saying something stupid just because they can't keep themselves from doing it.

This falls in the category of the (dealers) response of: "they all do it"!

If this shop had been kvetching about synthetic oils from day one they might not have been able to help themselves from rubbing salt in the wound when given the opportunity.  Warranty or not.  It's an oil that meets the defined specifications required by the manufacturer.  So there is no question on warranty if that's the question.  Might have to beat the dealer over the head with the obvious.  But in short order if that claim is being made by the dealer it'll have to go away.

I bought the stupid extendo warranty for my 09 mostly cause of all the gagetry on the Harleybago....

My HK radio is at ironcross audio getting de-glitched, as I am sure the ExW company will blame synthetic oil for its failure or the hawg wired amp.  I am tired of voice imodulation issues and blood pressure induced headches dealing with these aholes..

Aren't the rollers galling and the "hardened chrominiminimm" is flaking off these lifters? I thunked I saw it somewhere, gall, spindle out the bearings and kaboom the motor?

My sympathies to the OP...that sucks... >:(
