Mystery CVO Baffle?
« on: April 15, 2012, 04:59:59 PM »

From the CVOHarley Forum, http://www.cvoharley.com/smf/index.php?topic=28086.285  …there's a photo of a pair of cores. One is obviously a Fullsac core ………..the other appears to be a variation of a stock Harley core with added perforations/chambers ……likely for a better sound. Curious to know how this core works and where it came from?

Personally, I’ve tried both the 2” and 1.75” Fullsac baffles and found them to be a bit too loud for extended touring. With the CC now gone .......I'm wondering what kind of sound I'll get with the stock baffle. Or perhaps a modded stock baffle .........possibly with holes drilled strategically.

Thats a stock baffle on top, for trips I use the Harley cvo cans with  1.5 Reinhart quiet Baffles that I got on E-Bay for 19 Dollars, I think they are perfect for touring, I you have a good tape measure, a chop saw and a wire welder you can run any baffle you choose.

The baffle in Trigger-man's picture looks like it has a cat in the inlet end.  Mine (2010) looks like the one in Dartman's picture.

I have tried the Fullsac 1.75 (twice) and they are too loud for me.  I now have over 18,000 miles on my stock mufflers/baffles and they sound just right for me.  I believe the Harley insulation is burnt out and I also cut 1" off of the outlet end of each stock baffle.  Cutting the 1" off the outlet makes the back of the bike look better and also keeps the sound in the muffler housing.

Hope this helps.

Idea  :zstupid:
What about running the stock baffle on the left side and the 1.75 fullsac on the right?
Maybe it will quiet things down enough and still give you a slight increase in TQ/HP.

Dartman ......looks like two different baffles in your picture. The top one looks like my 2011 stock CVO core except the outlet end is longer ..........is the 2012 CVO core the second one down? It's a very different looking design (sleeved?) which appears to have a 1" center pipe. Love to know what you discover when you tinker with it. Here's picture of my stock CVO baffles which came with a very short outlet pipe:

OldLefty ..........I did try the stock baffle in the noisier right side and a modified 1.75" Fullsac baffle in the left side can. Sounds pretty darned good .......but I'd like to try opening the stock baffle up just a bit to relieve the back pressure.

Does anyone know of an effective modification to the stock CVO baffles for better sound and less back pressure? For removal purposes .......I've drilled a single hole near the outlet in order to hook a slide-hammer. I'm wondering if drilling a series of holes might be beneficial ..........has anyone attempted this sort of thing?

Ive drilled, cut, and modified probably almost every stock baffle produced, You can easily increase the decibel level on your Stock baffles by reducing the amount of overlap on the baffle tubes if you cut the end off of each overlapping tube at the weld you will notice a little more bark on acceleration. drilling baffle tubes can increase noise but its usually not a pleasant sound.

what about heat when putiing the stock baffle in right side and 1.75 in left side, already took cc out to lessen heat. This would probaly be the quiest, any tried it both ways?

Are you using the x-pipe or the stock cat (or catless) header? I have the x-pipe together with the stock CVO mufflers which keeps the sound at a more reasonable level. I like your idea of cutting an inch off the outlets to quiet the sound even more.

Like you I find the 2' and 1.75' Fullsac cores are a bit too loud, especially on longer rides.

I have the stock decatted head pipe.  Cut the ends off the outlets ONLY if you want a little more sound with the stock mufflers/stock baffles.  The stock baffles will get louder with miles.  The main reason I cut 1" off the baffle ends was to hide the look of the stock pipe ends sticking to far out the endcap and looked bad especially when rusted.

Sorry to resurrect an old thread but I have something to add.

First let me say my stock 2012 FLHXSE3 baffles look nothing like the steeped or two part baffles seen above.  My baffles look similar in shape to the Fullsac baffles, but the holes are very small and there are a lot more of them.  There is also a blockage about midway down.  I don't have photos as I just tossed them this week.

My new question is how ugly are these fullsac baffles?  If I cut them off as far back as I can to hide them (they will eventually rust) will I hurt my tune or change the sound to something that sounds like a Volkswagen with a exhaust leak (remember that whistle?).

I'm still running stock cvo cans because i want it quiet.. i run heavy machinery and the last thing i want is anything loud.

if i could find a muffler that did not negatively affect performance and was quieter than the stock cvo cans id do that.

That core is from a 2006-2008 CVO muffler. It does indeed have a cat in the inlet end. Starting in 2009 the Cat migrated forward into the headpipe. In 2012 they went with the perforated core and completely stuffed the muffler with packing. More than a few have knocked the plug out of the end in search of more sound. It does make a noticable improvement in sound but about zero for performance.

Anyone who thinks 1.75 baffles are too loud should just stick to stock mufflers  :nixweiss:

That also looks like the baffle Cycle Shack was offering years ago.
You sent your CVO muffs to them and the installed the CARB-approved baffle then returned them to the sender.
