US HWY. 50 IN COLORADO
« on: July 25, 2006, 08:38:19 PM »

In '04 on the way back from Sturgis, we made our way down US24 in Colorado and hit US50 at Salida.  We went east on US50 and the ride along the Arkansas River was great.

In the Canyon City, CO area you've got to see Royal Gorge.  In '05 I think it costs us $20.00 to cross the bidge, but it was worth it.  You'd hate to be there and not ride across on the planks.

In '05 on the way to Sturgis we went west on US50 from Salida and found it to be a great ride too.  The scenery just west of Gunnison was nice.

You'd need to pick up Colorado Hwy. 92 and ride along the north rim of the Black Canyon of the Gunnison.

One More! This the the Durango to Silverton train, we're at the Durango end. Notice the snow in the hills behind the train, this is June! It was in the 90's in Moab, and Monument, and in the low 30's in the morning in Durango, froze our butts off when we left Durango in the morning, had to stop in Silverton for coffee, to warm up again, before head'n out!

Howie, I was lucky enough once to make the trip on US 50 from Ocean City (MD) to the Bay Area.  It's the only transcontinental (mostly) two lane and it's a great ride; especially in the west.  You want to see it sometime we'll figure out a schedule and collect as many as we can as we go.  As much as I like some of the better (weirder, more lost) stretches of old 66 there's no doubt that US 50 is my favorite road in America.  If I had to pick one last ride it'd be US50 from the Mississippi River on west.  The whole road is good.  But west is best.

I'll have to give it a go sometime. It looks like some great riding! My Xcountry trips have been Northern routes. Time to give the Southern routes a try! Thanks Don. ;) Hoist! 8)

If anyone out there is not an AMA member, please consider joining.  The magazine this month has some good info on Colorado riding.

PHAZE thanks for the post.  Been on all these great roads.  Hwy 50 in Nevada is called "The Lonliest Road in America" for very good reason - you can rides for hours and see no other living soul.  Great riding out west for sure.

Great Pics!

I was out 50 to 550 last July.

The Gorge Bridge is a MUST!  550 was an awesome ride as well, great scenery!
