I appreciate the explaination but I still think a taller front pulley or motor sprocket is a much more practical solution and would save a couple grand. My scooter is hardly running at 80 mph (3000 rpm) and as I said their is definately enuff torque to pull a taller sprocket.
Now I do have some experience here, I owned an 85 fxr (a few years back) eventually I put one of the gears through the bottom of it's case (@60k), I literally spent a thousand dollars$$$ more for a 6 speed overdrive tranny replacement (paid $2400 it is installed in the attached photo) than for a 5 speed ($1200-1300). I was not impressed with what my extra grand bought me (300 rpm less), my point is that money would have been better spent elsewhere. I am just trying to pass on my experience. Oh Yeah BTW I do believe I might quailify as an iron butt, I have done 800 miles in a day  [smiley=worthless.gif]

Update on the 6 speed, spoke to Jims who makes the 6 spd gear set for HD and they said that you would need a 1/4 spacer off the trap door and you would have to lenghten the center clutch push rod 1/4".  You would also have to modify the exhaust due to clearence issues.

Or loose the hydraulic clutch.

My opinion, not worth it, I love the hydralic clutch to much and with the new Rhineharts don't want to modify the exhaust.

Just my 2 cents.

Just spoke with Baker Transmissions, there DD6, direct drive 6 speed, will bolt right into the stock harley SE case without modifications and there is no problem with the hydraulic clutch or the exhaust. Complete bolt in. Mine is on order today. Baker 1-877-640-2004

I know this is a different strokes (pardon the pun) for different folks issue.  But given the performance parameters of this engine I've yet to develop an interest in the six speed.

I had a six speed in the Milwaukee Vibrator (the only Softail I ever owned for a year about eight years ago).  In that bike it was a definite improvement.  In others I'd thought about it.  But the torque curve is such on these that even cruising the highway I can't see myself ever really seeing (or feeling) great advantage to it.

When traveling I tend to knock down about 750 a day.  I'm comfortable in that range.  On the rubber mounted engine behind a windshield the difference in RPM isn't going to make any appreciable difference to my butt nor is it going to effect driving economy in such a way that the tranny would ever even half pay for itself.

If someone wants one that is great.  The more comfortable and pleased one is with his or her own ride the better that is.  But I'll enhance my riding pleasure with a slick XM radio install, buy a set of exhaust and a Power Commander, and still have a fair amount of change back.

I DECIDED I'M NOT GOING WITH THE SIX SPEED.   AS STATED IT WAS OFFERRED TO ME AT
TIME OF DELIVERY AT $1995.  SWAPPED OUT WITH FREE INSTALLATION.  THESE BIKES ARE ESSENTIALLY HAND BUILT WITH VERY TIGHT  TOLERANCES, BETTER I FEEL THAN REGULAR  88'S.   I JUST DON'T WANT THE CASES APART ON A NEW BIKE.

After having my bike and ridden 8K miles on it, I too feel there is no real need for a six speed on this bike.

Maybe in a few years...  [smiley=nixweiss.gif]

Hey, Fast Freddie, how fast are you? Have you got that Baker 6 speed 1:1 final ratio drive fitted yet? That is the one that I fancy due to the 1:1 6th gear ratio (see last months American Iron) and I would like to hear feedback. Either Way.

Just ridden from London to Newcastle on a return trip 600 miles down the M1 motorway, don't really see any need for a 6-speed especially if its gonner cost a lot of $$$$$$$

I am trying to do the math.  Question-If you had two SEEG's with 20K miles for sale, in the same condition, one has a 5 speed and one has a 6 speed, how much more if any would you get  for the 6 speed.
