2005 Screaming Eagle 15k service
« on: May 14, 2012, 12:30:12 PM »

Hi all,

New to the site and HD's in general.

I recently acquired a 2005 Screaming Eagle Electra Glide.....It is just hitting 15k and I am about to service it.

I have many years of experience with Japanese and European bikes, (not my fault...I was raised in Europe after all).
I consider myself decent with the wrenches but am new to H.D work so wondered if there was anything specific to look out for on the 15k service?
Also, which lubricants would you guys recommend for this, I understand that its a Synthetic oil for the motor and I also have to replace the Tranny oil at this mileage.
I do not have a service manual and really want to get the service done asap as I'm excited to enjoy the weather.

Any little tips/trick or advice that you could share would be most appreciated.

Thanks.

I have the same bike with almost 35K - getting ready to do my service as well.  Follow the schedule in your owners manual for what to look at.  Buy a service manual - you will need it a some point.

Oils - you'll get all kinds of advice on this.  I use Mobil 1 V-Twin 20-50 in the motor, BelRay 85w-140 Gear Saver in the Tranny, and Mobil 1 LS 75W-90 Synthetic Gear Lube in the Primary.  Very happy with this combo.

Fluids and Oil Filter.  O'Rings (2) for the drain plugs, Primary Chain Inspection Cover Gasket (this is where I put the Primary oil in).  Don't overfill the oil - 3.5 qts. and check it.  Check tires and pressures, belt adjustment, go over nuts and fasteners.  I would make sure the steering neck is greased (Lucas Red & Tacky) - fill it until it comes out both ends, and that the is kickstand is greased.

If you don't have prior service records - I like to change spark plugs at 10K, check brake pads, check and consider changing brake and clutch fluids (careful with DOT 4 fluid on paint), and make sure your air filter is clean.

Take your time and know that by doing this yourself, you've saved a lot of money
