This is how I remove non-counterbalanced TwinCam oil filters without making a mess. The following procedure works best with the motorcycle on the kickstand.
I loosen the oil filter to the point it can be turned by hand without breaking the seal to the filter mount. I place a rag under the filter above the front motor mount. I then place an oil filter drain tray part# DS-310249 available from Drag Specialties for $16.95 MSRP under the filter with a small container under the spout of the drain tray. I use a long phillips screwdriver to punch two holes in the end of the filter, one at the bottom for oil to drain, and one at the top to allow air into the filter. Once oil is no longer coming from the bottom hole, I loosen the filter until the seal is broken to the filter mount. Make sure there is a gap between the drain tray and the filter so oil does not backup and overflow out the back side of the drain tray. When oil is no longer draining, remove filter.
The oil filter drain tray was designed for non-counterbalanced TwinCams with bolt-on oil filter mounts. The notch to clear the oil filter mount will need to be enlarged to clear non-counterbalanced Twincams with integrated oil filter mounts such as 2006 Dyna's and all 2007 non-counterbalanced Twincams.
This may not work with certain oil cooler adapters that attach to the oil filter mount depending on how the hoses to the cooler are routed.
