Question for those with Power Commanders...
« on: July 30, 2006, 05:46:02 PM »

I am running an 06 SE Fatboy.   After my 1k mile break-in,  I have installed the SE 2/1 tuneable pipes and it sound good.

If you have the PC installed, did you also do the HD flash or can I get away with just the PC?  HELP!

You need not do both, but you can if you choose to.  The Power Commander tunes from whatever baseline it finds.

There is a potential benefit to doing both.  If you're ever out someplace and the Power Commander takes a dump you can remove it and have the Stage I map as your baseline to fall back on.  Otherwise you'd likely be running very very lean for whatever distance it was you had to get home.

Doing both is just paying for a bit of insurance.  But it's not a necessity for any other reason.

2Lane pretty much summed it up, personally on my bike I did not do the stage one flash before hand. I have installed several PCIII's on bikes with and without the stage I update. The only difference is the starting point for the PCIII to map from. There a no performance benefit either way. The advantage to having the stage 1 is only if the PCIII were to crap out you could still have a semi-rideable bike.

Agree with above statements...the Stage I would be a fall back only, and would probably keep from doing any harm to the engine IF the PCM ever went bad on you.  It would be 140 buck insurance policy, like Don mentioned.

Tacoma,

There is one other consideration - the download could be a lifesaver if you have warranty problems in the future.

NE-Tacoma,

If you do decide to get a "stage 1" download for your bike, try to find out what part number is used.  I have had a hard time finding anything out about the HD downloads for these bikes.

Thanks.

ok..

I may just do the download and see how the bike runs.  Right now, I know it is not running clean with the SE 2/1 tuneables.  I seem to be the only one running this pipe.

Wouldnt do it myself without the download, have had the PC chit the bed on me and was glad I had the download in there.   To me saving the 159.00 bucks was worth the risk of leaning out the motor trying to get to a safe location.   Been in places my cell didnt work for hours, such as the badlands / wymoming etc.

The place where the motor leans out will be if you have changed the air cleaner to a higher flow one if you have done this you will want to make sure you have at least a download if not a good tune with PC / SERT.

Twolane preaches the right information, only for me its a do both situation.

If you don't have the PCIII w/rev limiter option, get the MOCO download and that bumps the rev limiter to 6200RPM.

I used to have a sheet, current through 2005 anyway, that listed the various download p/n's for different configurations, will see if I can find it and post. Probably a later version out there, maybe someone here has one.

Good info grc!  Now the question is, does the #34302-06 (softail stage1 race) have a corresponding race tuner map.  I remember seeing a "compatability" chart between HD download and race tuner maps for the older maps, but have not seen one for 06.  Hope that made sense.
