My wife and I are taking our first overnight trip this weekend. My question is what do you do with your bike at night? Do you just lock it up and fork lock it, or do you purchase the heavy duty lock system or just brake locks?
Am I being too paranoid?

Seriously I carry one cable look (1/2" cable) and I have the remote pager. If I have to go and check on the bike because of the pager gors off I do carry a Wilson CQB in caliber 0.45.

Also I ditched the stupid CVO cover and got one made of black parachute material without a silly logo on it.

Most places will let you park under the overhang close to the front door.  I usually try to park there if I can - if not park under a light close to the front door.  Lock it - cover it - make sure your insurance is paid in full and enjoy your trip.

If the hotel/motel has a covered awning and if the desk clerk will allow you (sometimes slipping them a little tip $$ persuades them) I'll park the bike there so they can keep an eye on it for me. I lock it up (fork locked), set alarm (have pager also), use disc lock on one of the front discs, and cover with an Exigent Bike Cover (no insignia's). If I'm not able to park under awning at front desk I request a room that will give me a view of the parking lot (preferably on the first floor near an exit) and try to park my bike outside the window of my room using the above means of securing it.

Don't cover it cause when I'm going long distance the last thing I have room for is a cover.
I do lock the steering and the alarm sets it's self.
So far (CROSS MY FINGERS) that has been enough.

In the past we have locked our bikes to each other with cable locks.  Of course you have to have two bikes.  Not sure if a cable lock on one bike would be enough to stop or slow someone down who wanted your bike.

When I got my first bike I was also paranoid that someone was going to mess with it.  But now I lock the fork,(alarm sets it self) park close as  I can to the room and go sound to sleep.  If something happens to  the bike that's what I have insurance for.  So far no problems.

We do a lot of traveling (leaving tomorrow morning for Colorado) and we do the same.  I get close to the room (as much for convience of carrying everything as security) as possible but sometimes that's not possible. 

That's what insurance is for!  Relax and enjoy your trip.

Mongo, Congrats on your first trip. Those of us that have gone on long trips usually get hooked.Regarding locking your bike, I usually cable my 09 to something metal if I can, or if there is nothing to cable to I will run cable thru back wheel. Usually stay at Casino's and there is pretty good security in most multi level parking. Big bike events are the places that a bikes are more likely to get stolen. Regarding disc locks, yes they are effective, but I have seen two people drop there bikes because they forgot about the lock on the front disc you could get hurt, mess up your bike. Just my opinion, but I would never use one. The locks can be picked just as easy as on a cable. There was an article a while back that on some of the tumbler style locks all you had to do was break off the end of a Bic style pen push on the tumbler key slot and the lock would open(I believe it was Master Brand) For some reason I am still paranoid about my 95 Heritage, but I don't worry much about my 09. After it cools I put a black cover on it and forget about it. Like one of the other guys said,"that is what insurance is for".  Have a great trip.CAHDBIKER

As others mentioned I ask to keep it under the front awning.  Most of the time the clerk will let you "tuck it up close". And as always keep the insurance up to date.  I have a list of mods I have completed that way I do not have to think back what was done to the bike.  This came in handy after I hit a deer on my 06 and totaled it.  Most policies have a 3,000 accessories coverage but if you have more than that you need to up your rider.  Enjoy the ride, David
