So I have been having this problem with my oil filter coming loose the last 2 oil changes. Not bad but enough to cause a small leak and it gets to alot of different places on my bike while driving. What chemical should I use to clean the area with that wont hurt the paint or chrome. I think the dealership used some kind of parts spray last time, they said they didnt want to use a cleaner that would be rnised with water. Im going to change my own oil this time and was hoping someone had a good idea. Is this loosening of the filter common on these 2008 serks.

A stout solution of Dawn dish soap and water does a great job on oil.

You shouldn't be having a problem with the actual filter coming loose.  Are you sure it isn't the oil filter adapter for the oil cooler that's loose?  It was a common problem, and I'd suggest checking the adapter and the gasket.

As for cleaning the residue, hot water and dawn dishwashing liquid is a very gentle method that works quite well.  You could also use something like S100 or one of the other degreaser products as long as you make sure to get it rinsed completely and don't let it dry on the surface.

jerry is correct, oil filer adapter should be checked every time the oil filter is removed.

Simple Green will work. I use it on my V-Rod to clean engine. Does not damage paint.

I heard some time ago that Simple Green acts as a corrosive to the metal?  :confused5:
Sure cleans good though

Dawn is the way to go. But as everyone is saying you should not have a leak. I give my filter one little tighten with the wrench and have never had a problem.

Screamin08-

This is a post that appeared on cvoharley some time ago.

Whenever the oil filter is removed take a 7/16 Allen and tighten the adapter fitting to tighten the
the hose adapter to the engine. you can locktite it, glue it or what ever and you still need to retorquc it.

Very common condition ever since h-d changed to the sandwich style adaptor plate for the cooler.  Would have hoped they would have come up with a fix by now, but from your post and another similar one I saw not long ago I'd have to say they haven't.  Like axil said, best to recheck the torque on that adaptor every time you change the oil filter, or if you have someone else do it you need to remind them to do so.  Dealerships won't necessarily do this automatically.
