Why Did I Listen?
« on: August 01, 2006, 11:39:36 PM »

...I go to a local dealer here in KC.

The mechanic's great. The dealer is a long-time client of the radio station I work for. Everything seems perfect.

My wrench looks at the battery in my bike and asks "how old is it?" Told him it's the original battery that came with the bike. It's an old wet-cell HD battery. He, of course recommends that I replace it with a no-maintenance gel battery. Of course I've never had problem one with the original, but he's right. One day I will hit that starter and it will fart at me.

Can you see it coming yet?

Yeah...Bought the gel idiot-proof battery. Left the bike for a week while I went home to Boston. Come back and attempt to fire it up this AM....FART!

I never had issues with the old battery...30 degrees, or over 100 it fired up EVERY time.

The tender's connected now...and I missed a day of riding.

Shoulda stayed old-school.

Sorry you lost a day.  But you know the battery gods were snickering....

Check to make sure that the battery cables are tight. Maybe when they replaced the battery they did not get them tight [smiley=nixweiss.gif]

Yep. Check the simple things.  I went out to my SEEG once last fall and it was dead as door knob.  Had just ridden the thing a day or so earlier.  Figured the gel battery had given up the ghost already.  Someone on here suggested checking the terminals.  This was not long after I had the HID light installed.  Apparently, the tech did not tighten the terminals down very well after he did this work.  I know it took less than a half turn, probably more like a quarter, but one of them was a tiny bit loose.  Bike fired right up after that! It doesn't have to be but a tiny bit loose to cause a problem.  Showing my age for sure but does anyone remember the old spring terminals that GM put on their cars back in the late 60s early 70s I think.  No nut to tighten up and even though you might not be able to turn the connector on the battery post by hand it still wasn't tight enought to make good contact.

That Tech needs to box his tools, and go to selling!  Ol' Maudie has got the original Battery.  Took delivery in October, 2001.  Keep trickle charger to it, always.  When she won't start, she'll get a new one.  Later--HUBBARD

I think it is, d00d.  It's been so long since I looked at it, I can't remember.  Later--HUBBARD

Yeah D00d, not everyone pulls the seat, removes the battery cables and buffs and repolishes their stainless steel battery cable bolts every time they ride man
