Is XM module an option?
« on: June 02, 2012, 12:31:11 PM »

I'm still learning here with my new '12 Street Glide. From most of what I've seen people that want XM get the XM antenna for their Zumo GPS setups. Is that the only route, or does the stock radio have the option to have XM added to it? I almost think not, given that the screen on the radio for changing source uses all the space for AM/FM/CD/WB/AUX/IPOD.

Just working out my options. Thanks.

You can add the HD XM module to the stock stereo with the addtion of a small harness to tap into the IPOD module wiring. There are threads on here if you do a search. Try "add XM module to SESG".  You can either add the 6B connector and use the Non Ultra Overlay Harness or make the small harness to piggyback the IPOD wiring.

Absolutely, outstanding answer Mike!  My stealer made the small harness and piggybacked into the IPOD wiring.  At least I assume this is how he did it since he said that he had to make the harness.  :nixweiss:

I installed the HD XM module and overlay harness three years ago. You control all the XM functions from the handlebar controls just like any other mode (FM,AM,Tape etc). One I have figured out is if you hold the button that changes channels for a few seconds the radio will go into scan mode but only for the 15 pre-sets.

I priced the XM module and for a little more I could get the 665 with XM.  It made it seem like I got a good deal on the GPS.  I had the stealer install it when he put on my pipes and tuner.  Got the bike home and XM doesn't even come up.  Looked in the box that the 665 came in and low and behold there is my XM antenna.  Looks like if you want something done right, you might as well do it yourself.

Really? Damn, no wonder people go with the Garmin solution. I figured it would be much cheaper...

The only thing I don't like about the Garmin solution is that you need to have your GPS in order to listen to XM. I leave my GPS home when I am staying local, but with the module I can still listen to my XM.

My friend ran the XM through her Garmin and everytime she was driving North the signal was at her back and unfortunately blocked by her shoulder, so her XM was chit whenever we were headed North. :-\

I imagine that would be the case for both Garmin and the head unit option as the antenna would be in the same place in the fairing. Is this a common issue for people?

I have the XM antenna in my fairing and the only time I had signal problems was on the BlueRidge Parkway in the Smokies.  Signal was sporadic because of the trees.

That's weird, Judy...is her unit a Garmin w/XM?  And is her XM antenna located in the standard place, or at least on top of the radio?  Being blocked by a human body is a new one on me.  Trees and mountains definitely cause issues.

The Garmin XM antenna is bigger than the module antenna and if it's under the fairing, it needs to sit on the radio. As a result, the signal, if you are riding north, has to go through a lot more of the fairing and it's not a strong signal causing a lot of cut out and degradation. With the xm module in the HD radio, the antenna is small and it sits at the very top right by the windshield so when riding north, it really isn't a problem. For me, I use the 665 and I mounted my antenna on the handlebar. I get good reception riding north and I didn't when I had it in the fairing. My antenna is detachable so I can also use it on my other motorcycle.

Gotcha... :2vrolijk_21:  On my '06 SEUC, I ended up putting the small HD XM antenna up on the top of the leather "dashboard" with a piece of Velcro.  100% better reception...hardly ever lost signal after that, but I live in the South, which does make a difference.  I've read or heard that the satelites are in the Southern Hemisphere, but don't know how much truth there is to that.

On my SERGU, I lose it in tree lined roads/mountains, so mostly listen to it when I'm riding the Interstate or major hwys.
