The key here is both that are talking about having the same problem, HAVE A THUNDERMAX INSTALLED!!!!! They also said after trying to start it once they tried again and it started just fine. I agree the compensator is a problem and it may be this time also. But my money is on the THUNDERMAX and their ACR's!!!!!

Smart money is on checking the most obvious item first, and in this case that would be the T-Max; it's a known problem that has been experienced by more than a few folks.  Before tearing stuff apart, or trying to get a dealer to tear stuff apart under warranty, check the most likely & simple stuff first.

Thanks Jerry. I am still convinced it's a problem with the T-Max. I like the THUNDERMAX but some do have problems. I have one of the first units ever produced on my 04. It has never missed a beat and the bike still runs great.

The Tmax does not use the ACR's.  It does not need them.
They are not being activated, in other words nothing.  They are inactive with a Tmax.

Where did you come up with that information Guppytrash?  According to the T-Max folks, not only does the T-Max allow you to control whether the ACR's are turned on or off, but the lastest revision level even allows you to adjust how long they remain open (dwell time).  The following is a cut and paste from the 051712 revision bulletin:
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
ThunderMax Software & Firmware Updates v.051712
TMax Tuner Software - Version 2012.0.9 (Throttle-By-Wire)
SmartLink IV Software – Version 2011.4.7 or Later

TMax Tuner Software: ACR Functionality (Automatic Compression Releases)
In Basic Settings, tuners will be able to adjust the dwell time of the H-D automatic compression releases (ACR’S) on 103, 110 and other large displacement engines equipped with them. This will allow the user to optimize thecranking-starting event when high compression and or aftermarket cams are employed in the engine. A value of (0) means the ACR’s are disabled, 1-4 increases dwell of closure to blow off compression to assist higher compression engines.
Note - This feature is not available in Gen II modules, engines with low compression or wide duration camshafts equipped with ACR’s some engine configurations may find improved starting with 1 or both ACR’s disabled by unplugging them.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

I have no idea when they added the basic support for the ACR's, this revision just adds the ability to fine tune the dwell time.

Anyway, the need for ACR's isn't something that is related to the type of ECM you run, it's dictated by the cranking compression of the engine due to things like static compression & cam timing, and starter characteristics (torque, gearing, etc.).  Changing from the stock ECM to any brand of replacement ECM does not change the need for releases.

Dont know which version I have but was told by Tmax it did not use the ACR in my 09 110.  Mine was one of the earlier TBW editions.
Sounds like my info is out of date.

Shop says idle was set too low and I was also lugging the engine in first gear. Funny that I forgot how to ride after the TM was installed. I get the feeling they can't figure it out.

Is the bike under warranty or ESP?  If so, I'm surprised they are even looking at it since you have an aftermarket ECM on the bike.  And what has a low idle got to do with a noise when starting the engine?  Also, how do you lug an engine in first gear if you are moving faster than 5mph?

If the ACR's are not active, that's the problems right there, Vern... ;)  Or at the very least, I'd do whatever it takes to ensure they are active/working.  I don't know anything about how you communicate to the TMax to check out things like this, but it should not be all that difficult to find out.

It is impossible to "lug" the engine in first gear, and a low idle speed has zero to do with banging noises while starting.  The folks making those comments are mental midgets and you need to find someone else to work on your bike.

Who installed the T-Max?  Whoever it was, even if it was you, needs to fire up the software and connect to the module, then go into the basic settings menu item and look for the ACR setting.  Make sure it isn't 0, which means they are turned off.  If you don't have an ACR setting, you need to download the latest updates from T-Max.  The definitive way to verify the ACR's are working is with a simple cranking compression test, and I'd suggest doing that even if the ACR setting is OK.

If the ACR's are verified as actually working properly, then I would insist the dealer pull the primary cover and check out the compensator and the rest of the primary for problems.
