thanks guys for all the sound advice but just so you know this aint my first rodeo ... I am a vetran of 28 years in the car business .. and until I have a package that is agreeable to both of us all I have is conversation ... I will keep eveyone advised if and when I do take one of these jobs ... both are great opportunitys and I think both are good people to work for ... to relocate I am looking for the total package not just annual compensation ...

Bama,  Congratulations on the opportunities you've been presented.  Go to the place you feel would make you and your family the happiest...money isn't everything...the place itself matters a lot.  Good luck and keep us posted...hell, if you run a really GOOD dealership, most of us would travel hundreds of miles to do business with one that actually values their customers and knows what they are doing in service and parts.

Honesty...Don't play games with Bike Availability...

Integregty...when you F-up...admit it...don't try to blame the factory or worse the bike owner.

Communication...if you tell a bike owner his bike will be ready Thursday...have it ready by COB on Thursday or call them...don't let the Bike Owner be the one to call the Service Department on Friday only to find out that the Bike is not ready.  Be proactive to call the Bike Owner when a replacement part has arrived.

Thank you TC but as I said earlier at this point all I have is conversation .... but please do me a favor ... define "Values their customers" for me because I think that is an EXTREAMLY good point as I know a LOT of HD dealers have become very independent over the years ... I wonder if that means selling them a bike cheaper then thier home town dealer...or discount parts and accessories to them when they come in...or to bump their bike in front of others that are in service so they can get it quicker or does it mean to show genuine appreciation before and after the sell ...to remember them and call them by name ..to take a little time and speak to them when they come in.... I would appreciate all of you guy's defining that for me ... I have always in the past tried to make my customers feel valued thus why I was able to stay in one town in the car business for over 25 years ... I know if a customer feels valued ..aprreciated ..he will be the same guy that will feed you again in 3 or 4 years by returning to buy again ..and also referring you to his family and friends.

Bama....I'm sure you don't need it, but would like to throw in my 2 cents on the great opportunities that you are considering.  I think the financial and business aspects have been wisely presented by our friend Hubbard.  I also think that they are especially important from the viewpoint that you are investing your REPUTATION in the new business relationship.  Based upon that reasoning I would lean towards the GM position, even if the immediate financial return was not as great as in a higher volume sales management position.  It's apparent from your comments that you've been successful in building a client base rooted in fair and equitable treatment accompanied by sincere customer service.  Depending upon the operation, you may not be in a position to build upon your expertise and reputation in a sales management position.  Your resolution of problems and customer concerns are only as good as the attitude and management style of the the GM that you are working for.

Having family and some of my closest friends involved in HD dealerships as managers, GM's and owners my observations have been that building on the HD corporate "family" basis of maintaining critical repeat customers translates to making the correct decisions each and every day.  In short, and I say this in the most respectful way, HD shops are indeed "asshole magnets" and the success of the shop is usually determined by the way the management deals with the less than ideal customers.

Just a thought and ....... GOOD LUCK.....as your concept of good business is exactly what HD needs more of.

You haven't made it in the car business without knowing what it takes to make a success both of yourself and of a business.

Hey Bama, you'll like Greenville, NC........home of East Carolina University as well as J & E HD.  Lots of HD activity in the area (always has been).....and a older, well established dealership (in new digs).  1 1/2 hour ride from the Coast and only 50 miles from where ole spydglide resides.  :o har!  ;D spyder
