V&H Dresser Duals and Vibrations...
« on: June 08, 2012, 07:48:40 AM »

Ok, Had them installed yesterday. Looks great, sounds great, runs great.... my issue is...

Vibration!

Is this the norm...

Not good vibes, annoying buzzing in the handgrips, floorboards, even my mirrors are blurry and useless now.

This is the 1st true dual system I have had and 1st full system, I usually do just slip-ons and never had this problem.

After about 25 miles I had to stop and get off with my feet hurting and hands feeling like a severe case of carpal tunnel syndrome!

Bike was rock steady before this, no way could I ride this in all day poker runs or take a trip on it like this.

I am thinking about going back this morning and having them remove it and reinstall my stock headpipe.  :(

I guess live and learn and lose more money. :(

WOW  :vrolijk27:  This doesn't sound right.  No way should you have this kind of vibration.  Is everything tightened down correctly  :nixweiss:  Take it back and have them check it out.

Check the heat shield next to your right foot board, it might be making contact and causing vibrations. On some models V&H includes a spacer for that side to separate the two, make sure it was installed if it was called for.

I think I'd be more inclined to blame the installation and not the type of pipes.  Take a close look at the clearance between the pipes and parts like the footboards and supports, the rear brake pedal arm, the frame, etc.  There needs to be plenty of clearance on a rubber mount bike, since the engine moves around on the mounts.  To have that big a difference in vibration levels after only an exhaust change is a good tipoff that they have the system in a bind or there is a definite grounding of the pipes somewhere.  Take it back to whoever did this to for you and make them fix it.

Check the other thread you started for responses.  Simple answer, it's not the fact you changed to a true dual style pipe, but much more likely a p-poor install job that either has the system in a bind or more likely grounding out somewhere on a solid part.

X2

The headpipes are rubbing the floorboards/brackets, muffler supports at rear.  Take it back.  Not the pipes fault.

X2 on taking it back to them and making them fix it.  It would be easier if you knew what was wrong first...I'd check the clearance where the front header tube/heatshield makes the bend behind the right floorboard, as generally speaking, that's one of the tighter clearances.  Even the stock shields are dimpled there.

Whatever...it ain't the pipes, it's the installation.  99.9%

I agree, I have true duals from V&H on my bike and I had to machine a small amount off the front of the foot brake arm and  relocate the foot brake a bit higher. Additionally, I extend the floor boards outward to develop a bit more clearance for the heat shield. Before that was done there was a vibration in the right floor board which drove me nuts. both were a simple fix for the sound and looks of the true duals IMHO.

After I had the dealer install the Dresser Dual headers I also noticed a bad vibration in the right footboard.

After they tried to tell me that "I installed the headers wrong" I politely remindend them that they were the ones that did the install not me.

That took care of the problem mostly but what really helped was when I installed a set of the Harley Goodies Floor Board Extensions. After you get done with your dealer you might want to look into these as well if you've not running a set right now that is.

X3. I had the same issue. Floor board extenders solved it.

Update:

I took it back the next day.  Had one of the owners of the dealership ride it. He agreed something wasn't right.  The guy who installed the dresser duals showed where he put the spacer and that they were installed right.  Then the dyno guy said it needed tuned, in contrast to the service advisor and parts guy saying "it's a CVO it doesn't need tuned."  The dyno guy said the rear piston was running lean and starving for fuel since the lack of back pressure with the dresser duals and that was causing the vibration(buzzy feeling) between 2k and 3k rpms.  They installed a Screamin' Eagle Super Tuner Pro which did help some.

And tomorrow morning at 9 AM I am bringing it back for a dyno session.  Dyno guy says he will have it vibration free(buzzing gone) after he gets done tuning it and it will run stronger than it ever has.

Wish me luck!

(fingers crossed)

Also, these floorboard extenders... does anyone know the part number on these to fit my bike and how much they are and how difficult are they to install?  Could I do them at home with just hand tools or do I need the dealership to install them for me?  I am 6'1" so I am sure they would add some comfort to my ride too.

P.S. I love the sound of the Dresser Duals and Hi-Output slip-ons... great Harley idle... really screams when getting on it, but quiets down to a very tolerable level at cruising speeds.  A great combination if I can get these vibrations gone for good tomorrow.  8)

You can get the footboard extenders from Harley Goodies. This is where I purchased mine from. Easy peasy to install. Installed mine while the bike sat on the jiffy stand.

Here's a link to his website. http://harleygoodies.com/pages/fbe_rider.html
think the part number was 09FL-CVO-EXT when ordering be sure to add your year and model info. You can shoot him an email and he'll get back to you quickly.
