Tuner - Warranty
« on: June 15, 2012, 05:15:16 AM »

Look I am really new to this so please dont beat me to bad.

I have the Fullsac C pipe on hold along with there tuner and 2 cores.

I thik I have read here that any other tuner other than the Harley tuner would void my warrany.  Is this true?

If it is can someone reccomend to me the part number of the Harley tuner I would need.

After reading more and more on these forums - all it does is %@$^ up my head.

So it's not possible to mod and tune?

I am looking for better sound and some heat reduction.

It has nothing to do with the brand of device used to alter the calibration (map) in the ECM.  Some crooked dealers will tell you they will still cover the warranty if you use the SEPST instead of other brands, but I'd suggest you get that in writing and signed by the dealer principle before you take them up on it.  The dealer doesn't control the warranty, H-D Corporate does.

If you are looking for a way to achieve what you want (better sound, heat reduction, better driveability), and are really worried about some jerk in a dealership flagging your bike, then look for solutions that can be easily removed without leaving a trace.  There is more than one way to skin a cat, as the old saying goes.  Or you could just do what most folks do, say screw it and do what you want and dare H-D to f$%* with you.  The law is on your side as long as your modification didn't contribute to any subsequent failure, but H-D has been known to ignore the law and make you fight them.  I guess if you're a person comfortable dealing with lawyers and standing up for your rights, fighting them might be fun.  But it may also be a little expensive and time consuming.

Any change made to the exhaust system that requires a tuning device to enrichen the air fuel mixture to keep from running even more lean than it does from the factory violates EPA regulations.  If a HD dealer does this to your bike, using whatever device, the EPA could fine the dealer if they chose to do so.  HD must prove, by federal law, that the modification to the bike is a direct cause of whatever failure occurs, if one does occur.  HD warranty denial is at best, inconsistent from case to case, and IMO, it has a lot to do with the dealer's reaction to the problem and whether they are looking for an excuse NOT to cover the problem.  If they denied warranty coverage on my bike for something like a lifter failure (known issue), cam bearings, oil pump failure due to excessive crank runout, etc.... Really, almost anything that happend to the engine...I would get an attorney in a New York Minute and fight them if they refused coverage.  I might even enjoy doing so.  If push comes to shove, HD would have a very difficult time saying that a modification like exhaust and tune, which their own dealers both encourage and perform, and which is done to (I'm guessing) at least 75% or more of the HD's you see on the road, is the direct cause of engine failure.  The same would be true with them saying brand X oil caused it over HD branded oil.  If you have an engine problem, it's a 99% certainty, at least, that it is related to poor quality parts in manufacturing and not a mod or a choice of a different brand of oil that meets the highest standards in the industry.

If HD keeps trying to pull this chit on people, at some point in time they are going to get sued, and I hope when they do it is made as public as is possible when they LOSE...and they WILL lose if the right person gets fed up with their BS.

But, to answer your question...Yes, any given dealer may flag your bike or try and give the mother company an excuse to try and deny warranty coverage.  I would say from spending 6 years on this forum, that vastly more problems have been covered under warranty than not.  Unfortunately for those who are denied, it's an unpleasant experience at best.

I've had 3 motorcycles that have been tuned with TTS, had X-pipe and baffles that have had some type of engine failure on the road away from my dealer. Never have I been denied warranty coverage and it's never even been mentioned.

My bike has the TTS tuner, Fuel Moto head pipe, and Fuel moto pro tour mufflers.

My local dealer has done warranty work on the bike.

An out of state dealer, who I had never done business with, because my bike left me stranded did a downed bike and had the regulator shipped in the next day.  Did it all under warranty no questions.

Understood. Lots of great info to be found here but don't let it cause sensory overload.  Just remember, "gas up bike, ride, repeat"  ;D

what the rules really are vs what they really DO are two different things

the hd warranty claims that if you modify any emissions equipment the engine warranty is void - they have to say that, its the law

if the epa wanted to ruin your day they can fine you 10k for changing the emissions - in reality they only go after builders that make lots of non compliant bikes

the extended warranty on the other hand is not a warranty but rather a service contract where you agree by signing and paying you money that you will NEVER modify the drive train at all, ever, and they will cover anything that breaks for a fixed term of time.

anything you do that changes the exhaust, air cleaner, or tune - that is not specifically road legal will , in theory, void the engine / emissions warranty.

however many items will still be covered - recalls will still be done - fixes like the cam bearing fix in the pre 06 bikes will still get done - head and head gasket fixes like on the 110's will still get done. - but at the hd corporate level if the engine cooks and burns up - they will blame the tuner and void the warranty - your particular dealer may choose to fix it.

if you have the financial resources to sue - you might win - but if you have those same resources you probably dont care since you can just fix it.......

So it sounds to me like

Do the mods
Keep the parts
Keep factory tune backup

Put everything back to oem before requesting any warranty work.

You've got it.  Either that, or just suck it up and take your chances.

I figure anyone buying a Harley is pretty much just sucking it up and taking their chances anyway, since they seem unable or unwilling to fix most of the crap they sell, so the best approach to maintain your sanity is to look at the purchase as an "as is" deal from the beginning and just plan to pay your own way for however long you own it.  If Harley accidently actually pays to fix something, it then becomes a pleasant surprise.  Looking at it the other way tends to result in being pizzed off a lot more.

Unfortunately I have come to live my life that way "have very low expectations".  Living this way prevents most disappointments!
