I guess I'm just lucky. " New York Myke " Shelby who owns San Diego H-D lives and breathes the life. He is the Abate Liason with the State of California Legislature, he has a live feed internet biker related show, he is constantly on the floor of his dealership shaking hands and hanging with his customers. Every Saturday there is live music and a free BBQ at the dealership and Myke RIDES to Sturgis, Daytona and all of the dealer shows on one of his bikes. So yeah, maybe he's unusual and I'm lucky, but I still think there's no way I'd buy a $20,000 motorcycle from a dealership where the owner would not give me a few moments of his time.

Like I said I like the concept but I just can't see many dealers taking an hour at a time out of their day to sit down to talk with all the customers who patronize thier store .... I think it would be great but its just unlikely ...at least in MY neck of the woods ... how ever I do think an owner should take the time to meet each new member of thier family when they purchase a new or use bike ...that should be expected.

At my dealership everyone speaks!
Even the owner! It doesn't take an hour!
If you,
Walk up to someone, ask how they are doing , how the family is, how about the bike,,, all that is 5 minutes or less.
YES, occasionally someone may take 15 or 20 minutes, but that's usually someone that needs help and hasn't gotten it.

I too have a fantastic relationship w/my dealer. He is a real people person and can remember almost if not all his customers by name (something I have a hard time of doing, must be those short term memory cell things again :D). He will always speak to you, ask how you been when he sees you in the store. I've had several occasions where I've went to him or his son (General Manager) about problems/situations that have happened to me, and each time things have been resolved they way that they should have been and to my satisfaction.

When it came time to purchase my SEEG I first approached them about getting bike from them, but they told me they could put me on the list but couldn't guarantee me a bike. I had already found a dealer in N.C. that could promise me the bike, but wanted to give me local dealer first chance at the sale. I told them that I had found a bike and told them I didn't want any hard feelings because I didn't get the bike from them, and more then likely would be bringing the bike to them for service. They understood entirely and encouraged me to get the bike from dealer in N.C. since they couldn't guarantee me a bike. I have taken them the bike to get serviced and for warranty issues and they have treated me and the bike as if it was purchased from their store.

I know the service manager and technicians really well, and request the same technician to work on my bike each time it goes in for service. I'm able to talk to technician and create a personal relationship with him and he knows how I ride/treat my bike and treats it the same way. All those that I have come in contact w/at dealership know that I'm "anal" about my bike, and treat it accordingly. One of the guys that washes bikes after servicing commented on why I even had them wash the bike after it was serviced because he knew he couldn't do a good as job as me when it came to cleaning my bike. I told him I just wanted them to get some of the grease off before I rode it, and it was going to get detailed when I got home.

I guess the main thing for me about this dealership is they treat me w/respect, are glad to see me, and appreciate my business. Also if they mess up something they will admit it, and make it right. Nobody is perfect, but if you make a mistake or mess up something be mature enough to admit it, and treat the customer, as you would want to be treated if you were the customer.

Silver that was not really what I was referring to ... " 5 min or less" ..Spidy had said earlier

"So my advice is to try what I have mentioned here. Start with the owner; schedule a meeting and wait a week if you have to to sit down with him. Explain what you hope to get from his dealership. Listen to what he (or she) has to say about their philosophy on running their business."

That would imply more then 5 or 10 miniutes ...not trying to split hairs here just being realistic ..if you DO have a dealer that does that I think its GREAT ...I just find it a little unrealistic is all

Spidy your preaching to the quire br'o ...I think I said I agree with you ..it would be GREAT but it just is not realistic here in my area ..and Mobile is 300 miles south of me... my point is that the dealer in most cases just will not take the time to sit down and chit chat for 30 or 40 min. with every customer who buys a scooter ..(hell the owner at my local dealership has a pittyful CSI and is ranked 5th from the bottom in the country in Customer Satisfaction but still sells 100 bikes or more per month)....I would be suprised if its that way in any store ...he might do it with a few but not all ... hey its JMHO...i started this thread wanting to know what earns your loyalty ...and I appreciate the input ..

I'm with Spider on this one.
If your dealer will not spend time with you FIND ANOTHER ONE.
And my point about the 5 minutes or less is,, if he will not give you 5 minutes to talk with him, then he will not give you 30 minutes to an hour!
Start small and work from there!

While I have lurked on this thread for a while, thinking about an answer, first congrats and good luck with new job. I guess long and short is this: 1)Customer relation,2)Customer relations, and 3) Customer relations!  I guess from that you figures I think that is important. If I purchase a product from you I should get respect and dealer loyalty, and for me to give you respect and customer loyalty all you need to do is: if you don't know the answer, find out; if you don't have it, make every effort to get it; and if it is broke, just fix it! I could elaborate as obviously these are the things my dealer does not do, so I am forced to travel to parts unknown to try find these things consistently. Hope all works, John
