Crusing RPM's for the 110
« on: June 21, 2012, 12:47:00 PM »

I know this sounds like a VERY basic question, but having just gone from an '07 96ci to a '12 110ci I am curious to know if anyone else has experienced a change in ideal cruising rpm's.  We ride two-up 99% of the time.  Previously on the 96 the motor sounded and performed best running about 2500 rpm's or so at 50 mph in 5th.  With the 110, it seems like we run 2200 or so at 50 mph in 5th, so I run in 4th at the same speed but seems like it is revving high at 2800-3000.  Maybe it is just me needing to get used to the two different engines and their own quirks.  So I have two basic questions:  1)  If you have a 110, what do you find is the best cruising RPM?  2)  Any issues with cruising at a higher RPM (3000 or so) for extended periods?  Hopefully this makes sense, but happy to clarify if I am not clear enough.  Thanks!

Anything above 2200 RPM is fine, in whatever gear, at whatever speed.  I "cruise" at 3K, but I'm in 6th gear and not running 55mph.  ;)  I personally would not cruise at 3K in 5th, just because I don't want to and have another gear, so I don't have to.  In certain traffic situations, I'm shifting a lot between 5th and 6th.

On the 2 lane I travel alot (55mph speed limit)) I usually run about 60/62 mph. @ 6200/6300 rpm. That in 5th of course, no 6 speed on mine. Fifth gear on yours even at 50mph should be adequate for crusin. 3000rpm running 50 would seem tight to me? I'd be shifting for sure!

You might want to shift up a couple gears Kenny before you wear that thing out. ;D

Thanks for your input guys.  My only concern was that I noticed a little engine "tapping" at the lower rpm's that seemed to go away at the higher rpm's (just turned 1,900 miles).  I can't seem to figure out if it is a noise that was there on my other bike, or something new with the 110.  We noticed that with the taller OEM wind screen on this bike (we had a shorty deflector on the old one) that we can hear everything much better, and maybe that the noise has always been there, only we couldn't hear it on the other bike.

Bulldog,

There are lots of posts here about the noisy valve train of the 110 especially around 2,000-2,500 rpm.  Most are living with it.   :nixweiss:   I don't ride two up as much as you but I think you'll find that 70 mph is about 2,600 rpm.  Many of us cruise above 3,000 or even 3,500 (and higher) very comfortably.   :huepfenjump3:  I'm not mentioning any names!   :huepfenlol2:   :huepfenlol2:

I run Headquarters Black Ops lifters. They are quieter than H-D lifters. But 110s are just kinda noisy... you'll get used to it eventually.  :nervous:
