How do you bleed your Hyd. clutch?
« on: June 21, 2012, 04:49:59 PM »

I have had the shift hang up problem happen to me one time at A light. (there is A thread about this where it gets stuck in A gear in my case third) The concensus seems to be bleeding the clutch. So I look in my big MOCO service manual and there is nothing about the hydraulic clutch. So I have ordered the CVO supplement but I am headed out on A 9 day trip and not sure it will get here in time. I would kinda like to do it before I go. Want no issues on the road! Your help is appreciated.

I use a power bleeder. Creates a vacuum with the bleeder closed, then the bleed screw is opened to suck air/fluid out. Process is repeated until all air is out.

The service manual supplement says to bleed the line by pumping the clutch lever 5 times, hold lever in, release bleed screw, close bleed screw. Repeat process until no air is seen coming from bleed screw.

Old school method: loosen the bleed screw so just a trickle (very, very small trickle) is escaping to a hose on the bleed screw. Leave for 8hrs or so while topping off reservoir as needed. Close bleed screw.

Hope this helps.

You'll also want to bleed your master cylinder...

Just did one a few days ago when putting hydraulic clutch on the old class triple red SERG.  Used a vacuum bleeder (light vacuum) on the bleeder and let it pull the reservoir down enough to add fluid a couple of times.  After that already had some pressure against the lever.  Than three or four cycles of pump-pump-pump-pump-pump-bleed and she was all done.

Of course it still didn't work yet.  But I didn't expect it to.  Knew that with my SAC grips and the braided spoons (only hydraulic spoons I had) there wouldn't be enough travel.  So started with changing to ISO grips as part of the parts change.  But still needed just a teeny bit more free play.  So had to cut the leather braiding off the spoons too. After that it was all good :2vrolijk_21: .

I assumed it would be simalar to bleeding brakes but thought I should ask. Thanks for your input.

Actually bleeds much easier than the calipers often do.  Especially the Brembo calipers.  On the tranny side cover the bleeder is at a high point that is also much higher than the inlet line.  Allows the bubbles to find the bleeder without much trouble.

The Service Manual procedure works fine for me. A power bleeder might work better, but the simple method with a tube from the bleeder valve seems to work OK.

Just remember to keep the clutch fluid reservoir not-quite-full as you bleed. As the clutch wears, the reservoir will get MORE full as less fluid is needed in the clutch mechanism to release the clutch... this is the opposite of brakes, in which the fluid level drops with wear.
