Service Plan
« on: June 26, 2012, 05:17:29 PM »

How many of you bought the service plan when you bought your NEW CVO?  When it expired, did you buy additional coverage?

Extended warranty?

Thanks in advance

Purchased the 5 year extended plan when I bought my 08 springer. So far have used it to replace compensator. Had to pay the difference of standard comp to SE comp.  Really hope my motor takes a dump about a month before my plan expires.  I don't believe I'll renew my plan.

I bought the 6yr ext service plan with wheel and tire. I wish I had on my last bike as I replaced 3 radios in it. It would have paid for it self. Also bought the 4 year 5 oil change plan at the dealer for a discounted price of $900.00. That will pay for it self after the 10000 mile service in August. It's like a insurance plan. Hope I never use it but if i need it it their. Good luck.

I would never give them any more money.... I couldn't wait to tear my 110 apart and breathe some more ponies into it "warranty voided" fotunately the only issue I have had, has been the dreaded compensator! I fixed that myself after the two year warranty had expired. I had taken it to the dealer on three seperate occasions after faulty starting and they were clueless. They replaced ACR selonoids, battery. I only figured out the problem after researching info on this site, what a great tool!

I did the same. Don't know if it's such a great deal though. I may cancel it and get a prorated refund, and use the money to do more stuff to Buster!

If you're talking about a Service Plan, meaning changing oil, etc, offered by the dealership...then that depends on whether you want the dealership doing all your service work, or if you prefer doing it yourself.  I personally would not purchase one of those from my dealer.

What the dealer calls "Extended Warranty Plan" is actually an "Extended Service Plan"...it is not a factory warranty extension, but rather an insurance plan that takes effect after the 2 year manufacturers warranty expires.  There are various versions, with the most common being a "5 year" (three additional years after the 2 year factory warranty), and a 7 year (5 additional years).  You can get tire and wheel coverage for an additional cost with either/any of them.  Whether it's something you ought to do depends...TECHNICALLY, if you do any engine mods or exhaust mods, it voids your engine warranty.  BUT, application of that decision is somewhat dependent on your dealer...in other words, HD is inconsistant in their enforcement.  The more modifications you do (cams, etc) the more ammo you give them to deny warranty coverage without a battle.  Federal Law mandates that they prove the modification caused the failure, so you can follow that to it's logical conclusions.

Having said all that, I bought the 7 year ESP along with tire/wheel coverage.  I do all my own work on my bike and just keep good records to prove it.  The dealer only touches my bike when there is a warranty issue I feel is worthy of getting them involved in.  I look at it this way:  if I lost a wheel due to damage (not a wreck), or my radio took a crap, I've practically paid for the ESP right there.  If you lose a lifter on the engine, it will likely pay for itself there as well, IF the dealer doesn't give you any chit for "modification" of the engine by virtue of an exhaust change and a tune.  It's an insurance plan...you hope you'll never need it, but if you do, it might be worth it.  It gives me peace of mind, so I bought it.

To expand on Midnight Rider's comments, the ESP isn't administered by H-D, it's an outside company that's endorsed by H-D.  And they are not subject to the Federal warranty laws, since the product is NOT a warranty.  So while H-D may or may not cover modified bikes depending on the whim of the day, the independent ESP company has been known to take a pretty hard stand on certain things.  For instance, trailer towing is verboten.  So are internal engine mods.  And I'm sure there are many other items in the fine print as well.  As is the case with any ESP product, you need to closely study the actual details in the contract to know what's covered and if it's worth anything to you in your particular circumstances.

Basically this product is like any other insurance product that relies on shared risk. Some folks make out, most do not. First and foremost, the price is determined by the historical costs of repairs, the sales costs (commissions to H-D and it's dealers), administrative costs, etc., plus a tidy profit.  So it is pretty obvious that the average buyer of the product does not recoup his investment.  If everyone who claims the ESP paid for itself several times over was the average customer, obviously the ESP company would go broke or they would have to raise their prices exponentially.  So you need to assess your actual risk and your tolerance for that risk.  If a couple thousand dollar repair bill would put you in a financial bind, but the additional X dollars a month on the bike note for the ESP wouldn't, then perhaps it makes sense to buy the coverage.  On the other hand, if you took all the money you'd save by declining the ESP and putting it in a rainy day fund you'd still have the money two years down the road when any repairs would not be covered by the factory warranty.  If you have a failure, the money is there.  If you don't have a failure, you have a couple grand set aside you can use for other things.  If you buy the ESP and don't have a failure, you are out the $1500-$2000 you spent on the plan (plus finance charges of course).

There is no right or wrong answer.  Everyone has different priorities and financial situations, and all I can suggest is that anyone considering an ESP should do some research before signing on the dotted line and handing over a pile of cash.  These folks aren't offering this product just because they like you and want to help you; they are in the business to make money.  As the old saying goes, there is no free lunch.
