Excellent advice on all counts.  I did some additional research and decided on the just released Yamaha RXV 773 WABL 7.2.  I got a really good deal on it and I think it will do all I ever want to do.  It has future proofing, with 4K capability (WTF that means), but mainly I think it will serve my purposes.  I have been using Yamaha stuff purchased back in the early 80's, and never had a problem with it.  Originally, I had Infinity speakers, but I blew out the woofer on one of them so got the Bose 301's several years ago.  They are OK.  If I were buying everything new, I would not go with Bose, but since Judi already has them installed, I'll live with them until we upgrade the TV to a larger size.  Currently, I've just got a Sony Bravia, and it's only a 32" or so, because it's all that would fit into my cabinet.  The picture quality is excellent, but you need to be closer to it to appreciate it.  I am figuring a way to mod my cabinet to accept a larger screen, as I like the cabinet and side bookshelves that go with it.  A slide stand will probably be what I do, with it living outside the parameters of the cabinet...but, I will be limted to size, so am probably going to do a 50" at the most.  Judi's house is not HUGE where the TV and such will go, and if we move again in the future, we will likely be in an even smaller home, so 50" is really all I ever see myself needing.  Speakers are a different matter, and I will definitely upgrade them when I do the TV.

All cables to hook up the HDMI, etc, will be Monster, other than the speaker wires, which are already there.  They are not wimpy, but not what I would put in if I were doing it now.

If I had an unlimited bankroll, I'd have state of the art chit, but I don't, so it's a mute point.  So somewhere in the upper middle range is what I'll shoot for ultimately.  Hopefully, the amp will do the job I'm after.   :nixweiss:

Terry,
Yamaha makes good chit, so you should be good to go with that.  Although, I haven't got a clue what all that extra stuff is your were saying it has.   :nixweiss:  It's been awhile since I've bought audio equipment as I'm not as in to it now as I was when I was in the Navy and was able to get all the latest and greatest audiophile equipment overseas in the exchanges for rediculously low prices.  I love my Sony receiver that I have now though.  Once thing I would definitely recommend though is get a Logitech Harmony series remote control.  It's easy to set up, all done online via software.  I swear by the Harmony remotes.  Eliminates having a bunch of remotes sitting around and they're easily updated should you change anything.

Charlie...I was looking at those Logitech remotes the other day on line.  From the description, it sounded like a good solution to the multiple remotes usually required to operate everything.  I have used Logitech hardware for my keyboards and mice for years, as I don't buy computer "systems", but just update my box every 3-4 years and keep the other stuff 'till it dies or I wear it out.  But Logitech has always served me well.  Once I get everything hooked up and running, I'll see how much of a hassle the Yamaha remote is to use and will likely look into the Harmony.  Any particular model that you recommend?

The Yamaha amp I've been using all these years served me well...when I purchased it, CD players were first coming out (a single player was then about $600, so that gives you some idea of how old the amp is), but Yamaha had foreseen the future and had a "DAD" input which was the for the CD player.  I finally got around to buying one of those a few years later (Onkyo).  Back then, only specialty stores sold Yamaha stuff, and there was no such thing as the Internet, so you couldn't do any real research on equipment...just go by ear and what the salesperson told you.  I could never afford a McIntosh amp, but those used to be THE best...the Dead used them for their "Wall of Sound" back when they were doing that...it was the cleanest sound I've ever heard.  For home use, you really need a dedicated room when you get to those kind of levels in equipment purchases.  The normal Den just won't cut it.

Yea...can't wait for that, Harry  ::)  I was going to wait until we got moved into the "new" place, but got to thinking that I would prefer to only hook all this chit up one time instead of fighting it after the fact.  I am looking forward to getting what we have hooked up and enjoying it.  It will probably show me that I need new speakers, but I'll cross that bridge when I get there... :2vrolijk_21:

I am  still a 2 channel guy.

Chartwell LS3/5A's    luxman 3045 tube mono amps, Technics SP10 MKII turntable with Grace 714 arm.

vandersteens, mac amp , AR 6b pre amp.   great sounding

I just cannot get excited about 5 channel or 6 channel stuff.

I guess I am old school.

Man I feel like a schmuck.  An old Sony boom box hanging on a hook from the wall above the TV with the TV's audio outs hooked to it by RCA patch cords.  The cords were too short so I did at least solder the splices though.

I've been going through all kinds of things in preparation for the move...found a big 'ol box of albums the other day and took a trip (literally) through memory lane.  A couple of the double albums still had seeds were particularly interesting. :huepfenlol2: :huepfenlol2:

Well, Geez...if I had that chit, I'd still be listening to the albums through it too.  That stuff will blow your clothes off if you get too close to the speakers... ;)

Terry,
I'd recommend the Logitech Harmony One, or if you want to be able to do RF instead of infrared, the Harmony 900.  Either one is an outstanding remote.

I hear ya on the McIntosh, you couldn't beat those tube amplifiers for pure sound. Also the original Phase Linears (700 and 400 series) were great high end amps too.  Hook them up with a set of Altec-Lansing A7 Voice of the Theater speakers, a Revox reel-to-reel, and a Dual turntable and you could definitely rock the house (and the rest of the neighborhood for that matter). Bob Carver (who originally owned Phase Linear, before it was sold to Pioneer) came out with a great setup back in the late 70's early 80's.  Unfortunately, you had to mortgage the house to buy all of this equipment.   But I digress, we were talking about remotes.   :huepfenlol2:

Thanks, Charlie and Q...I will look into this further when the time comes.  Also, with this new amp, you're supposed to be able to download a free ap for your Iphone or Droid that enables control over the system with a GUI interface on the phone.  Pioneer has been doing it a little while, but I think it's new to Yamaha.  I'm up for a new phone this year, so might consider it after further research.

When the Dead did their Wall of Sound, they ran a lot of it through Macs, and they (or their Roadies) built all the speakers too.  It was massive in size...so massive that it was actually dangerous for the roadies setting it up due to the height and hauliing heavy speaker boxes up two stories high.  They eventually quit using it because it took so long for it to get set up on the road, and the number of tractor trailers it took to haul it all over the country.  But man, when they were using it, and if the Dead were "on" that night, it was something else to hear.  Some of the purest sound I've ever heard from a stage set up.
