2010 SEUltra.  Removed inner primary at 20,000 miles as inner primary seal was leaking.  The inner primary bearing appears ok..

Here are pictures of the removed SE compensator.  Engine ran good but did have the clank when shutting motor off.  No clank when starting motor.

The chain pulley ramps are worn the most.  I believe the only way it comes is in an assembly.  Have used Redline MTL since the 1,000 mile service.  A lot of red rust around the shaft extension and these parts.  I don't run anything hard so that is not the issue.

Would you change this compensator or continue to run??????

Would you change the inner primary bearing while replacing the seal??  The inner race looks ok at this time??

Thanks in advance-Bob

Thanks in advance.

The only real wear is to the inside washer inner surface.

Wow Bob.  Sure wish I could be of some help here.   I'm sure someone will see this and give you some good advice.   Maybe Jim from Metal Dragon.  Good luck with the issues.   :2vrolijk_21:

Yes, I'd replace it...  You don't have to replace everything - they sell a "kit" to replace only the wear parts.  It's 83935-09A.

It includes parts 2 thru 7 as shown on the last page of the attached PDF... (page 6)

I believe MSRP is $219.95...

I believe that was about the miles I had when mine went.  Jim replaced it....the $50 deductable for the extended warranty and it was all good to go. :2vrolijk_21:

Scott-Thanks for the part number of the wear item kit and thanks to JC for your report on the same.

Local dealer had the whole compenstaor kit and put it together last night.  Just hope the inner primary seal leak is gone.  Even put in a chrome inner.  The compensator is just something I found when taking apart to fix the inner seal leak.

You'd think it would last more than 20,000 miles.

Yes, you most certainly should be able to expect a basic part of the engine would last at least as long as the spark plugs (new change interval on plugs is 30k miles).  The old compensator's tended to be one of those parts you never thought about or screwed with as long as the nut was properly tightened.  The new primary system introduced in 2006/2007 has basically introduced all sorts of problems that didn't exist before, and of course Harley isn't exactly setting any records for speed in addressing those issues.  I've voiced my opinion before, but basically it says that Harley doesn't give a chit about long term reliability.  If they can get the majority of the bikes they sell past the two year factory warranty before this crap fails, they are home free.  They either sell you the parts to temporarily fix it, or they sell the parts to the ESP company.  They've pretty much got the market wrapped up with their patents, so there isn't any viable aftermarket replacement to compete with them.  So they have everyone where they want them, over the barrel and grasping their ankles.

You're 100% right Jerry.

The sad thing about the compensator is that everyone talks about the lack of lube to those areas and the wrong lube being used.  The word "fretting" is used a lot to describe the red rusty like compound that comes out of those areas when taking apart.

The sad thing is the new compensator was lubed with an antirust grease for shipping and those areas (bores) aren't exactly new looking on the new compensator and had the red rust effect on the new sealed package parts.  Came out of the box that way.

On my 3rd compensator at 40K.  My main wear is at the top of the ramps.  Looks like they were beat on with a hammer.
