Oil change
« on: July 01, 2012, 08:13:33 PM »

After reading about the benefits of using a higher grade oil in the transmission and primary I decided to see for myself. I run a 2011 CVO Street Glide and was complaining about the noisy transmission. It would clunk into gear and was noisy on shifts, but most annoying of all was the whine in first gear. I just did a service and changed the fluids using the Spectro 6 speed transmission oil and the Spectro Primary Gear oil. It has only been a couple of hundred miles but already I hear and feel a major difference. I did not get a very clear answer as to whether it would void my warranty. The question I have is why are they putting motor oil in the transmission when clearly there are better performing products to use?

It costs HD less to just throw one crappy product in all three compartments, instead of finding three crappy oils to put in their new bikes.  Getting the cheapest and poorest performing fluids ain't easy.

Plus, think of the millions and millions of dollars the stealerships will make by repairing premature failures in their customers' bikes.

Capitalism at its worst.

Obviously, opinions vary.

I run Amsoil in all three holes.  Own two Road Glides.  An '01 with nearly 90k miles.  And, an '11 with over 15k miles.  No trouble or noise whatsoever.

I have seen inumerable failures recently with redline in the tranny.  Unreal.  And, NOT for me.  All superstition maybe but I"m staying with what has worked for me for decades.

I am using Spectro as well and gear shifting is smoother, quieter and that anoing knocking sound called neutral rattle has been a lot quieter. Over time it will get better when the gears bed in and oil impregnates into gears, selectors and other moving parts in the transmission.
