Agree with everyone else regarding the frailty of the retractable. I make sure WE open the lid and gently bring it to its stopping point. Then, I am a hawk about not leaving it hang open. Stress.

So for you that have it installed already, is it reachable for you BSR to operate? I know with the tether my wife has to pull on the cable to bring it back over to close. I too have an alignment problem (which I have had on every tour pak I have had on every bike) so I like that fix as well. Is everyone else finding the same fix for the alignment issue?

Thanks.

Did my Ultra Brace install today.  Piece of cake, but I did take my time and measure and line everything up about a hundred times before I started drilling.  With the rivets (thanks, Pete!) it looks really OEM.  They probably should just come this way.

Rob, the brace is low and easy to grab in the center, not like reaching for the top of the lid.  I think it is similar in feel to using the stock strap to get the lid to start coming over.  Definitely helps with the alignment, too! :2vrolijk_21:

2harleys, How about one with a release button for closing the lid? I know someone in that line of work could figure that out and have it mount where the teather mounts now. Just a thought.CAHDBIKER

a gas shock would put alot of srain on the the plastic lid and box I would think when in a closed position or when trying to close lid -- JMO

The problem is that when the lid is closed and you have a gas shock, the gas shock is always trying to fully expand All of the time. Therefore the shock is always "pushing" on your tourpac causing undue strain on the plastic.  Just imagine what your gas shocks are doing when opening the hood of most vehicles or rear hatchbacks, and how much pressure it takes to close that hood or hatchback. Open that hood slightly and let go, and the shocks will push your hood up. Would you want that kind of pressure on your plastic tourpac all of the time?

Yes it does.  But every time I open my tour pak lid I am so very glad I installed the Ultra Brace and got rid of that pos tether.  One of the best add ons I ever made to a Harley.

As far as the shock goes it would have to be a proper one for the application....not one for a car but one for a real light application...so there is no undo stress...they rate them In pounds of pressure needed...

.....and which would you pick, for an unladen TP rack.....or loaded up?
I think the Ultra Brace is about as good as it's gonna get.

Let me know how that works out for you. Does not matter what the # rating is---- there is still undue stress on the tourpac as the shock is ALWAYS trying to extend. That is just the nature of a gas shock. Personally, I will stay with what I have installed--- that works extremely well. The car shock I mentioned earlier was just an example of how all gas shocks work.
