CVO PAINTED PARTS
« on: July 12, 2012, 08:17:18 PM »

I had an accident where an SUV had a rear window blow out on the freeway. Drove through a ton of broken shards of glass. Both fenders and the tank got scratched up pretty good.Luckily I had on a full-face helmet. I called and insurance will cover the damage. I have gotten different stories from different dealers. Some say I need to turn in the tank and fenders to get replacements, other say there is no restriction on the tins and they are mine to keep.Who is right? My preferred dealer wants the tins. The other doesn't. Anyone have any experience with something like this. By the way $4800 for the painted parts.  Thanks Frank

I'm confused with this also.....When I got my 2010 SESG repaired the dealer wouldn't let me keep the tank. The after I get the bike back, I heard that some dealers let you keep the parts....never did find out for sure.....I always thought they were supposed to return them or get fined by HD....

In theory, you have to send back the old tins... If you really want to keep them (why?) go with the dealer that says you can. If there's a fine from HD, it's on them, not you.

I've heard of insurance companies wanting parts back as they sell them to resellers to help recover their replacement costs.

Talk to your insurance company to see if this is the deal.  They usually have the repair shop ship them to whoever their reseller is. If so ask your insurance adjuster what you can purchase the parts for. (Your dealership may be trying to do this knowing it's a good deal.)

I know of people who have purchased the damaged parts (tins) paying what the parts broker would have paid.

May be worth purchasing if the only damage is paint scratches.  See how much the parts sell for on CVOHARLEY or E-Bay to help make a decision.

Had to replace a rear fender, R saddlebag, and R sidecover on my 2005 SEEG due to someone on a cel phone behind me.  Ordered from Jenni (now Rebecca) at Tri-County HD and all she needed was a VIN number.  Got to keep all the old parts.

When I just got my geezerglide (2010 CVO ULTRA) the front fairing got scratched took it to Hacienda HD in Phoenix they ordered a new one using my VIN, did not ask for it, still have it, if anyone requires a slightly scratched 2010 RED CVO Front fairing, get in touch with me.

All depends on whether your insurance company wants the parts or not. If they do
the parts are theirs.

No front fender, just a scratched front fairing.

If the dealer keeps your old tins then they better credit your for it. You pay for the original tins when you bought the bike and you pay again if you need replacement Tins??,, I dont get that one :nixweiss:..   In 2004 I had a 2003 (100 year anniversary) Dyna that had a dinged tank and dealer let me replace and keep my old tank, but the removed the Tank Medallions on the old tank saying that was the only way i could keep it..  i didn't argue with that since new tank had new Medallions..

Just came back from a camping trip in Cotter AR.  While riding there I ht a dip in the asphalt and the handlebars broke!  they actually cracked just inside the clamps.  Cracked the inner fairing cap and the inner fairing when the broke loose.  When I got back home, I took the bike in for an estimate (I had the bars replaced in Arkansas - 3 day wait for the bars)...$825 for the inner fairing and $250 for the cap.  Six to eight weeks for painted parts.  There were no restrictions.  I hope this helps...

This was true.... but it didnt always happen... My tank from my fatboy got scratched in a mishap... the ins paid to repair the bike so the parts became theirs... and they released to me.

My dealership requires you to turn in the painted parts.
