Had a chat with my dealer this past weekend about the "late" release. He says it was at the request of dealers. It gives them more time to sell out the last of the current model year at a time when sales are good.

My dealer told me the same thing on Saturday. The dealers do not like having to discount current model year bikes during their prime Summer selling season.

500,000 potential customers at Sturgis and no new model year bikes. Not a good marketing plan IMHO. Seeing a new model year bike at Sturgis was the prime reason I purchased my first CVO. I came home and ordered "Orange Peel" after seeing it at the Rapid City Convention Center HD dog-and-pony show.

Which reminds me to comment that the small, crowded, and hot HD tent in downtown Sturgis sucks compared to the air-conditioned roomy Rapid City Convention Center location.

The bulk of the 2013 Harley-Davidson model lineup has been revealed in documents released by the California Air Resources Board. While this is a fairly lengthy list of models, it may not be complete as Harley-Davidson sometimes saves a couple of new model announcements for later in the year.

Most of the models revealed are returning models but there are a couple of omissions as well as several additions, including new anniversary models celebrating Harley-Davidson’s upcoming 110th anniversary.

The list includes three new models, including two additions to the Custom Vehicle Operations line. The Road King gets the CVO treatment next year as does a new model called the CVO Softail Breakout. There isn’t any information on the Softail Breakout except that it will use the 110ci (1802cc) engine like all the other CVO models. Another addition is the Street Bob NGP which also gets Harley-Davidson’s 103ci (1687cc) engine while the regular Street Bob will use the 96 ci (1584cc). Beyond that, it’s not clear what separates the NGP from the base version.

The CARB documents also list nine Anniversary Editions based on several existing models. These include the 1200 Custom Sportster, the Super Glide Custom from the Dyna family, Fat Boy Lo and Heritage Softail Classic from the Softail line, the Road King and Electra Glide Ultra Limited from the Touring family, and the Tri Glide Ultra Classic Trike. Also listed are two anniversary edition models from Harley-Davidson’s CVO line, the CVO Road King and CVO Road Glide Custom.

Absent from the 2013 model listings are the CVO Street Glide and CVO Softail Convertible, and the  Nightster from the Sportster family.

4 or 5 of just about everything at SMHD in East Tennessee.  Only one SEUG (used banana bike) and a couple SESC's.  No word from them either way on what's coming out....reading about it here first.  I agree with wildclyde that the MOCO not having the kick-off at Sturgis is a BIG mistake.  That, along with the great riding in the area, was one of the major reasons to keep coming back every year to the Black Hills.  Haven't been in a few (but planning a trip out next year) so, hopefully, the mother ship gets an earfull from this years comments and goes back to new model intro the first full week of August like God meant it to be....they listen so well up there at corporate, you know.....wink wink/nod nod :huepfenlol2:

I go to Sturgis every year for many reasons, one of which is to see the new bikes coming out from all the manufacturers.  Guess which one didn't have any 2013 bikes or merchandise out at Sturgis this year?  If you guessed Harley Davidson, you would be correct.

Anyone have any explanations as to why they would miss rolling out their newest bikes at the biggest bike rally in the world :confused5:  I'm going with stupidity.

Harley web site has shown for several months that 2012 bikes and gear would be on display at Sturgis. Therefore it is not something people didn't already know about. One of the dealers here is having a big Saturday night affair to debut the 2013's which I think is kind of cool. I am old, I still think all the new vehicles, Cars and Bikes should come out in September and the Chevrolets should all be debuted together the last 10 minutes of a commerical free Bonanza. (anybody else remember that?)

Yes to Bonanza, the Cartwright family and Hop Sing.  And yes to the Chevy intros.

When I was a kid I remember going to the Ford and Chevy dealerships in Kennebunk, ME in September and seeing three models of each brand. Remember good (Ford Custom, Chevy DelRay), better (Ford Fairlane, Chevy Biscane), and best (Ford Fairlane 500, Chevy Bel-Air Impala)? That was then.

This is now and new automotive vehicles are introduced throughout the year.

What made the Harley Rapid City Road Show so special is that you could see every model in every color in a large air-conditioned venue.

My dealer is lucky to get one CVO model in each color spread over the model year and some of those are already sold.

The decision to skip 2013 introductions at Sturgis was a huge marketing loss for HD.

The decision to abandon the Rapid City Convention Center is worse. See the third reference below for Harley's spin on why they moved to Sturgis after 20 years in Rapid city. I say bulls**t to the overcrowded, sweltering hot tent where you can barely hear anything even if you tried asking questions.

Harley's marketing department wants you to purchase your new Harley CVO from a catalog.

My dealer rolled out a 2013 Red Ultra tri-glide out on the floor today. Could not find any real changes. Looks to be status quo!
