For you mechanics
« on: July 21, 2012, 01:00:59 AM »

Think of going for the Andrews cams and wondered how many of  you have done this and find out the crankshaft runout was out of specs. Almost a little nervous about what I will find.

Almost all the 06 and up wheels I checked have been .004~.006. Now is this out of spec? Not to the MoCo.

In 07 after the service manuals were printed to show max .003 the Moco decided up to 12 thousands is acceptable. :'(

Cheap insurance to change the inner cam bearings, so I'd recommend it.  Use the higher quality and capacity Torrington's.

Something else you should definitely consider changing is the lifters.  There have been way too many roller failures mentioned on the late model engines, especially the 110's, and once again it is cheap insurance to change them out while you're in there.  Lifter roller failures or inner cam bearing failures have the strong potential to wipe out the entire engine when the parts get strewn throughout.

Is this with all of the 110's or a certain range of 110's?

Forget the SE lifters they are junk and noisey.   If you can find them 99b lifters still work well from Harley.   Been using S&S for years to replace the stock lifters.   With Big inch motors you may consider using the travel limiters with the lifters.

Like all things on this site you will have opinions like the woods, new Tmans, black ops, and fueling.   The S&S are reasonable in price and work, imo no reason to pay out the nose the for some brands despite what the "propaganda" of the week is.

:2vrolijk_21:    The Screamin' Eagle and JIM's lifters share a reputation for the same sort of roller failures as the late model stock lifters, and they also seem to have a reputation for noisy operation and just poor quality in general.  I owned a set of Woods super duper lifters for about a day, total junk and the replacement set was mismachined such that the antirotation pins wouldn't fit.  Woods answer was to file the lifter until the pins fit, to which I responded KMA and I returned them.  I'm back to running the B lifters from Harley.

The only brand of lifters I haven't heard any complaints about, over many years, are the ones from S&S.  That isn't a scientific observation, just a perception.
