The Beartooth Highway was built to lure tourists to Red Lodge which was financially suffering from the coal industry.  The name “Beartooth” is derived from a rock formation in this mountain range resembling a bear’s tooth.  The road is ~ 30 miles long from Red Lodge and the summit of the pass is ~ 11,000 feet.
