Replacing Head Gasket
« on: July 29, 2012, 08:38:24 AM »

I've been reading many threads on the topic of the rear head gasket leaking oil on many of the 2007 RK CVO's.Most of them posted back in 2007 with many new bike owners experiencing this problem.Five years later and  a second owner of a 2007 Road King CVO I too have joined the head gasket leakage club. With 8200 miles my bike is starting to seep oil from the rear head gasket.Although the threads posted were very informative I'm trying to find out what the sure cure was for this problem.I know HD has revised the gasket numerous times .Did they finally get it right? For those of you who have experienced this problem and finally solved it I would greatly appreciate any info on the proper solution Thanks

It really depended on the bike, for most it was new heads, and the newest todays head gasket.  For some it was liners in the cylinders moving as well.    Was the recall ever done on your bike?  If so you maybe you can find out if you got the newest head gasket when they did it or just one of the teasers that brought you back in again.   The other thing that was changed was the compression releases the new ones seem to stay in much better :)   One other thing you may want checked when they do your head gasket it was a lot o fthe 07's did not have the rockerboxes clearanced properly.  Harley did remedy this either by taking a dremel / or or other tool and grinding them down, or depending on when you got your bike they released new rocker box bases that were pre clearanced as the orignials shoudl have been.   This caused an annoying ticking noise.

You can go on harley's site and put in your vin and check if any recalls are available for your bike.

I did check with HD and they have no record of any warranty or recall work being done on the bike . I have the latest part number for the revised headgasket. Just wondering if I change the leaking HG with this new one will I be good to go.Do I change both rear and front HG ? What about another brand head gasket such as cometic? Ill check the rocker boxes once I remove them to do the job

I would see if you can still get the head recall work done and use the latest gaskets and you should be good to go.  when they have the heads off have them check the cylinders too.
