I'd probably just do the oil change and call it a day. :nixweiss:

I agree.  I would definitely get the oil out of it and put a new filter on it.  I changed mine for the first time at 100 miles.

You don't really have to worry about doing it exactly at 1000 miles.  In reality, it really shouldn't even be necessary at all if Harley built these things right the first time.  For instance, when was the last time you had to take your car in for a 500 or 1000 mile first service, the 1960's?

IF you have a shop that actually does all the inspections and adjustments the schedule calls for, it might be a good idea before taking a road trip to get the critical fasteners checked, the belt adjusted, all the switches and electrical stuff checked out, etc..  But if you plan on taking it to a typical Harley shop that only changes the oil and filter, you won't gain anything by doing it at 500 miles versus 1400 miles.  Never assume your dealer actually does all that stuff on the check list.

Ok so it's not going to void anything by going over then. I would figure the fluids would be good for over that and the other stuff I understand checking.

I am in pretty much the same situation. We are planning a 2000 mile trip with a new bike. I rode 400 miles yesterday to get to 600 miles. I scheduled the 1000 mile service for next week assuming I will get the other 400 miles in. My dealer schedules three hours for whatever it is that they do. It is probably overkill but I am willing to play the game the first time.

I was caught in the same situation on my 08. Had the service done with just under 1500 miles on it with no problems. Dealer told me it would not void any warranties.

Wait till you get home, It is not that important. This is 2012 not 1960. Way to much drama here for a minor thing.

The purpose of the first oil change at 1,000 miles is to clean it up inside.
Change it early, period.
you have a $30,000 bike take care of it properly.
Better to be safe than sorry

just a thought

Change the oil and look the bike over for anything loose or leaking and ride....

This is sound advice...hopefully, everything on the new bike gets checked out as it should be.   The changing of oil prior to 1k is a good thing in my opinion as there may be particles of who knows what in the oil/oil filter from assembly and those first few critical miles of break-in.  Remember, these are air-cooled engines....not your new-age water cooled variety.

Best thing to do is call the dealer and ask them what they think about it. You could also ask an independent shop. I believe on my last bike I had the same thing and went ahead and got the 1000 mile service done a little early.
