They can not void the warranty even if you do not take your bike in for their recommended services. In the US anyway, a manufacturer can not require you to keep a scheduled pay for maintenance regime to keep up your warranty up to date... that's the law. I myself do my own maintenance, I keep records, receipts, etc. just in case I have a issue and the dealership tries something shady like telling me I didn't follow recommended maintenance and so they won't warranty the issue.

For the 1,000 mile service change your oil/filter, change primary lube, change trans lube, change the spark plugs/wires, grease your steering head bearing, check the tightness of everything, fluid levels in break/clutch reservoirs and call it a service. Save yourself the money it's a ripoff. :)

"But if you plan on taking it to a typical Harley shop that only changes the oil and filter, you won't gain anything by doing it at 500 miles versus 1400 miles.  Never assume your dealer actually does all that stuff on the check list."  Jerry, you said a mouthfull there!

We have three different dealerships (each with multiple locations) to choose from in the East Tennesee/Knoxville area.  Without stating the dealership, there is one that I will NEVER take my bike back to.  Things that were scheduled for on a service were not performed but were paid for and the bike came back dirtier than when it went in...not acceptable.  I do all my maintenance except for the first 1000 mile service as I want to make sure the factory/dealership has a record of that first service.  Plus if there is something wrong from the factory, that first service is the best way to catch it (if I haven't caught it already).  A plug on oil here...only HD oil and filters have EVER gone in or installed on my Harley, especially during the warranty period.  I've worked on and been associated with respectable mechanics  over the years and from what I and they have seen, you can tell the difference in motors that did and didn't use HD oil, especially long mileage motors.  I AM NOT putting down aftermarked oils, just stating what I've experienced....ok, off my soap box!

My suggestion is don't assume your dealership performs all the items on the 1000 mile list.  Discuss this list with your service manager PRIOR TO the service, get the price set up front and stick to your guns if there is any discrepancy.  We assume too much at times (I'm the worlds worst at that) but remember the 5P's....Prior Planning Prevents Poor Performance.  If you get it addressed the first time, it can save calling a tow truck in the middle of nowhere.  All of this is common sense stuff but always good to revisit.  ;)

Uhhh, I don't think you need to waste money changing plugs and wires at 1000 miles.  Plug changes are now scheduled at 30k miles per the latest Harley maintenance schedules.

You are absolutely correct that you don't have to pay a dealer his inflated prices for this or any other service to maintain your warranty coverage in the USA, thanks to Federal warranty laws.  For those who have the skills and tools to do so, it's perfectly acceptable to do your own maintenance.  You can also have it performed by someone else, like a qualified independent mechanic or even a capable friend.  Some like to try to cover all their bases by having the dealer perform the first service, along with the inevitable laundry list of defects most folks seem to find on their new bikes these days.  But there is no evidence I'm aware of that paying a dealer his inflated price for an oil change actually results in better treatment if you have warranty issues.  While I'm sure there are a few places that might still try to play games, most places that have been in business for awhile are at least somewhat aware of the laws that apply.  Where you might find a difference is when you are seeking assistance with something that isn't specifically covered by the warranty.  It's been my experience in the auto business that dealerships tend to look at things like where you spend your money for maintenance and accessories when they are asked to help a customer with repair costs that aren't covered by warranty.  But IMHO that is not a good reason to grab your ankles and let a Harley shop charge you $400 for a $80 fluid and filter change.

When my new SG came in the stealer opened the fairing to install my GPS.  Then at 1000 miles they did my scheduled maintenance.  They fired my best mechanic, so when I was going to install my XM radio, I found out that my mechanic was working at an independent shop.  Long story short, I took my motorcycle to him for installation of the radio.  He showed me the fairing where the stealer only put half the screws back in when they put it back together and at my 1000 mile service they never greased the steering bearings.   :'(. I will never take my MC back to a Harley dealer for work again.   >:(.  I also was charged $150 for the radio install and Harley dealer wanted $445.

I can't complain when I bought the bike the 1000 mile service was something I got in the deal do it cost me nothing. I went ahead and did synthetic lube so that ran a few dollars out of my pocket. All in all I'm very pleased with the dealer this is my second bike from them and they allways have treated me fair. The only bitch I had was they was the bike after everything is done they say at no cost well that's bs but I did not have to pay so who cares but when I got it back it had water spots all over it so I was alittle pissed to say the least. I did complain about that as my OCD kicks in and I'm picky so they re washed it and filled it up with gas. Now I will do my own service from now on.

Jerry, are you in the auto business?

Used to be, before I retired after 35 years with a major American vehicle manufacturer.

In what century did people ever change plugs & wires @ 1000 miles? New bikes go 30K and cars do 100K. Totally blown away by that one, Wires?? really??? I cannot understand what anyone would think this accomplished.

Just curious if anyone has a 1000 mile check list? I did change my engine oil and filter at 600 mile but I'm getting ready to change my primary and trans to Redline and would like to service my bike.... it seem that hd dealers don't do what I ask and when I ask it's a major issue for them lol . I'm tired of being dismissed by uncaring people.... you ask them about a problem with your 38k bike and without them looking at your concern they just say "that's the way it is!"
Thanx Jax

The easiest way to get the checklist these days is to set up a profile on the Harley web site and then you can just log in to your profile, put in your current mileage and they will give you a list for the recommended service.

The purpose of the first oil change at 1,000 miles is to clean it up inside.
Change it early, period.
you have a $30,000 bike take care of it properly.
Better to be safe than sorry

just a thought

I agree.  The 1000 mi service IMHO ought to be the 3rd oil change.  And yes, at 1000 the Primary and Trans as well.  First oil drop is around 75mi.  Then 550 and again at 1000.  That's just me, but very cheap ins.
