Oil extractor?
« on: August 16, 2006, 11:58:29 AM »

getting lazy in my old age and was wondering if anybody uses oil extractors vs just pulling the plugs on their bike?

Pros vs cons?

I've looked at oil extractors too.  They sound like a good idea, but I wonder if they get the last bit of oil out where metal particles sink to the bottom.  I feel that if you take a drain bolt out, the last couple ounces is where you get rid of the particles.   [smiley=nixweiss.gif]  -Steve

Pulling the plug to check for metal particles is part of good maintenance. If there is a problem in the motor or tranny you just may catch it before it becomes a major issue. I would never use one of these devices.

On my old boat, it was impossible to get to the drain plug beneath the twin 7.4 Horizon Engines so I bought one of these extractors.  Jabco?  Worked ok but the pump started to leak and was not overly reliable.

Oil extractors are a necessary evil when dealing with certain things like I/O boats, since removing the drain plugs would require raising the engine or drilling an access hole in the hull (not highly recommended, btw [smiley=oops.gif]).

The 3 HD drain plugs have magnets, good reason to "pull the plug".
The crankcase plug is not a magnet, but it is in the bottom of the cavity.

If you so desire to use an extractor, check out the West Marine offerings. They have a pump available with adapters to fit many different vehicle/boat engine drain plugs. You could probably adapt one to fit.

I would guess you are thought about this with the idea of minimizing the mess, won't happen till we come up with a better oil filter mount!

How about that idea, has anyone relocated the oil filter?

On my 1982 Low Rider I was able to buy a kit to "ADD" an oil filter, and it mounted under the engine, in the back.

Oil extractors are not an industry acceptable standard for properly servicing any engine. In some cases (particularily inboard marine engines) you may not have much choice but for something as easy as a motorcycle is to service, I would never recommend or do it to anyone's bike.
