I went to Catholic school in the late '50s, and early '60s.  The Nuns used the rulers to rap the knuckles of misbehaving boys.  No behavior modifing drugs in those days. 
Many years later, I was in a dimmly lit movie theater when the hair on the back of my neck stood up and I felt very uneasy.  Then a couple Nuns walked by in the aisle wearing their habits and long rosaries.  Talk about post tramatic stress!
