Stripped Primary Drain Plug
« on: August 10, 2012, 04:30:01 PM »

My SEUC5 is in the shop for the 60K service (I have lifetime prepaid service).  Service writer called me so say they were almost done, but there was a problem.  Seems the primary drain hole is stripped!  "We talked to ESP, and convinced them to cover the replacement, so will only be the $50.00 deductible"  WTF??   :sauer005: :sauer005:

They have done all of the service.  You mean these things wear out???  Sounds more like a ham fisted service "tech".  If they got ESP to pay, well good for them, but I don't feel that I owe any deductible.

What say you?

I fully agree with you.  If they are the only ones who have been doing the fluid changes, they are obviously responsible for the stripped threads.  Those threads don't have a specified life of X number of removals and insertions, after which they automatically fail.  I smell some sort of BS here.  And I seriously doubt that ESP would pay for a stripped thread, so that part of the story sounds like BS as well.  If ESP is paying, I'll bet they weren't told the truth about what was wrong.

I guess you could consider yourself lucky they didn't do to you what others have had done to them.  Strip the threads, wrap a few layers of teflon tape around the plug and carefully insert it so it lasts long just long enough to get you down the road a ways before it starts leaking.  That game has been played in many a dealership or quick lube place all across the country.

Never ever saw the threads on a drain plug wear out by themselves, some ham handed individual obviously gave an assist.

And don't let them throw in a helicoil instead of replacing the casing, their fault = their replacement cost!

yup!  Ask for the parts back.  Or at least, ask to see it when you pick the bike up..

Negative on paying deductible.  You might want to mention to the dealership that they ought to buy a service manual so they know the torque value for a drain plug.

Torque values are only applicable when the thread is inserted correctly silly!

I love these "dealership maintenance" nightmare stories.  It just gives me affirmation that when I completely become senile and can't even wipe my own a$$, I'll at least still be able to get a job working on Harley Davidsons at a dealership somewhere.  :rolleyes3:

The ONLY option is: New primary cover, show the tech. how a torque wrench works and ZERO deductible!! Good luck!

Spada84, good luck with your situation and of course I hope the dealership covers the deductable. With regular service at 60K the plug probably was only taken out and put in less than 20 times. They probably cross threaded it and then pulled it out and tried to force it in. Something like the drain plug, especially where it is located could become very dangerous if not replaced with a completely new primary case and plug. Lets say you were going down the freeway for 100 miles and it leaked just a little it could get on the drive belt and all over your rear tire which might lead to a situation at the next offramp. Just curious, with a lifetime service can you pick your own fluids and pay the difference if you want to?Good Luck CAHDBIKER

Went in to pick up the bike today.  I explained my position, in a calm and reasonable way.  The Service Manager is a M-F guy, so the writer took it to the GM, and I left with no money out of pocket.  Will (the Service Writer), told me that the tech noticed that threads from the primary pulled off of the plug when he cleaned it, about a turn and a half.  Sounds like someone cross-threaded it in the past, weakening the first couple of threads.  He could have just threaded the plug in, but they didn't think it was safe.  In any case, I now have a chrome inner primary - which I am fine with.

cahdbiker - Yes, I can bring in or specify other oil and they will use those.  The previous SM (who passed away suddenly last December - real tragedy) used Red Line in the primary, and maybe the transmission.  They also change all 3 boxes every service, even though the manual does not call for that.

Curious; is your perception when they do this that they're going above and beyond the norm in some positive way?  Or is your take that they're doing unnecessary service they can charge a little extra for without really taking much more time for the effort?
