HID headlights
« on: August 12, 2012, 01:07:17 PM »

Regarding these HID 3 kit head lights. I've seen a bit as to how good these head lights are & how costly & all say it's well Worth it. The safety of being seen cannot be disputed by any terms but I haven't been able to find what the life expectency of these high cost & fiddly installs kits are  :nixweiss: :confused5: It would be appreciated if any one could shed a little HID light on this mater be for I go & cash out for something that lights up day & night that may only last a few months.  :confused5:

That is a good question?  I would like to know the answer myself.  How long have they been out anyhow?    For the price they should have a lifetime guarantee!  Todd

Had HID's on my '04 RG for 4 years and on my '09 SERG almost as long.  No issues yet.  Most high end automobile manufacturers have offered them for years.

If you stick with a reputable manufacturer when you buy your kit, a properly engineered HID system should last at least as long as the halogen system you have now, and in most cases it should last longer.  I have seen some reports about some of the aftermarket stuff that hasn't been very good at all, with ballast and bulb issues.  So all I can say is buyer beware; do some homework and don't believe all the stuff those folks put in their ads.  If the kit you're looking at is much cheaper than the competition, there is very likely a good reason for that.

Thanks for the feed back. The cost I've seen is in the $650/750 which is a lot of dosh here in the UK like in the Regan of £5/600.00 pounds. More then a weeks pay befor tax. Question are these prices with in reason or being over the top.? Is there a rep: manufacture that can be suggested. Much obliged & be seen & safe.

I've had Hemrick full set for two years. I don't get to ride all that often though. My only issue is the fact that the passing light bulbs are too hot and melt the reflector. They have never responded to my calls or emails asking for an alternative at my cost or better reflector again at my cost. I like the output, but my reflectors look crappy. I'm probably the only one to notice, but I do every time I clean it. If you go with Hemrick ask them if they've changed bulbs to resolve passing lamp reflector overheating. If they can't answer or act like they never heard of it go somewhere else. Otherwise its an easy install to a great performing product.

The most you should pay for a four bulb setup (dual headlamp and both passing lamps) should be around $400 or under if you're doing a conversion. HD sold a headlight, but has since discontinued and had a ridiculous price. If you plan on spending upwards of $600 maybe go with LED's  :nixweiss:

Is this a kit or do you just switch out the bulb from the halogen housing? I missed something in the thread ...

It's a kit, there's a ballast that plugs into headlight socket, then HID bulb plugs into ballast. One ballast per bulb

Get a dual bulb setup and convert the low beam bulb over to HID. You maybe able to find one used now that guys are converting to LEDs. Its the same as Harleys HID light without the HID bulb. HID kits are pretty cheap on line. I've had mine since 06 and never a problem with it. HID bulb life is rated in the thousands of hours. Not hundreds. Chances are the ballast would go before the bulb.

I swapped out the bulbs on my truck 5 years ago and have only had 1 fail, just a few months ago. Also have them on my SERG. Only down side is the reflectors are made for standard bulbs, so even if you crank the headlights all the way down, you're still likely to get flashed frequently... and not the "good" kind of flashing  lol

Get a dual bulb setup and convert the low beam bulb over to HID.

Or do as I did, and convert both (though it's essential to have dip stay on when you switch to main beam, as they have a warm up time)

I never had a need to turn on the high beam except to open my garage door. ;D Light output from the low beam is more then enough.
