Newbie Questions
« on: August 14, 2012, 12:24:03 AM »

This past Saturday I bought an 06 FLHTCUSE, its black and green, 5,000 miles.  It looks bone stock except for V&H 4in rounds. I traded a 09 FLHT.  I put about 700 miles on it this weekend, the 06 fits me much better than the 09, I like it alot.

A couple questions:

The tourpak led light does not come on, I pulled the liner and checked the electricals, all looks good.  Is there a secret?  Do I have an electric lock?  How do I activate it?

Was there a nav option in 06?  If so, is it still available?

I tried to turn the heated grips on, the left grip end would not easily rotate.  How easy/hard should it be?

This bike has a 6 speed, and Im guessing the 70 tooth sprocket because 6th is pretty much unuseable.  Fuel mileage seems to be pretty low, what kind of mileage should I be getting?  I havent figured it yet, but Im on empty way before my misses 07 RK.

The owners manual is useless.

Pics tomarrow.

First, welcome to the site!
Your Tour Pak light does NOT come on automatically, you have to push on the light lens itself and it should click on. If not it could be a bad light.
The locks for the 2006 are all manual.
The nav was an option in 2006 and the module cost a couple of hundred dollars and is no longer made. The software disc to operate the system hasn't been updated in years so all the info would be old and out of date. The much better setup is to add a H-D or Garmin GPS, you can pay  an extra $75 dollars or so and get lifetime software updates.
My factory heated grips worked fine. Just a firm twist of the knob to change settings.
6-Speed was not standard in 2006 so the question about gas mileage would be hard to answer without knowing the gear ratios used not just pulley teeth. I had the 5 speed but carried a heavy load most of the time, I would get between 32 and 35 mpg on my 2006.

I dont understand the keyfob operation.

On my misses 07 RK, if the keyfob isnt within 15-20 feet of the bike, it will not start.

My 09 FLHT that I traded didnt have security, this morning I started the FLHTCUSE and didnt even thnk about having the fob.  The bike started right up, the fob was in the house.

So why did it start?

Where was your other fob? Maybe in the tourpak! Just asking!

In 2006 the fob was different from later years, no automatic on and off based on distance. That is why there is a button on the fob, if you push the button it should chirp the alarm or flash the turn signals to let you know the system is armed. So you could actually stop the bike and walk away with no alarm if you don't turn it on.
You would also have to hit the fob button to turn the system off before riding away. I would guess you were able to start bike because the system was off.
