OUCH!!! Paint Question?
« on: August 15, 2012, 03:45:04 PM »

I managed to let my GPS lead me down a one way street ending in a small hillside parking lot. I have to admit that my low speed riding skill sucks. I dicked around until I overbalanced to the down hill side. Some of you know what happened next. It was a slow motion lay down but it rolled over the engine guard and caught the fairing. The point of contact is on the edge of the right side of the fairing. That is bad enough but look what else happened. Large flakes of paint popped off. If look close you can see that the edge of the remaining paint is loose.

My question is, does this look right? There is no sign that the paint is actually adhering to the plastic under it.

And yes, my ass is suitably bruised from being kicked.

Sorry that this happened to you.  I'm loosing count of the times friends have been mislead by their gps.  There is just no substitute for checking a map, paper or digital ahead of the ride.   :nixweiss:

No it does not look right.  What likely happened, however, is that you flexed the ABS plastic so much the paint pulled away. They can be repainted but you'll likely have to replace it.  Good news is that you can sell the old one on EBay.

Sounds like the correct answer to me and most likely the fastest, easiest, cheapest fix is to replace it.

Ditto.  Order a new one and be done with it.  Cheaper than trying to repair the damaged one.

I've seen several 2012 CVO's with damage and every one has big chunks of paints missing just like this one.  What's the deal with that? On my friend's Ultra, the paint is coming off in chunks under the windshield molding. Something doesn't seem right.

If it's Vivid Black then that's a very common and easily obtained color. Most qualified painters can do a repair/paint job on the damaged area. I crunched my vivid black part of my front fender and it was fixed/painted by the guy that does my dealer's work. I can't tell that it was ever damaged. One heck of a lot cheaper than replacing.

I had my 2009 painted and saved some cash from buying new.
