Neutral light inop
« on: August 18, 2012, 09:16:14 AM »

Anyone know how to troubleshoot the neutral light? Sometimes it comes on very dim, sometime slow, sometimes not at all.  No service manual with me.

Thnx in advance,
Mal

Locate the neutral switch on the left top rear of the trans directly behind the top cover.  It will have two wires connected to it, use a small flat blade screwdriver to pry the connectors up to remove them.  With the ignition switch on, short the two wires together and observe the neutral light.  It should come on steady and at the normal brightness level.  If it does, that tends to indicate the light and the wiring are OK and the switch itself is the problem.  The latest part number for a replacement is 33926-06B if you determine you need one, and it should come with a new O-ring.

Might want to try a little emery cloth on the switch terminals.  A bad connection will cause the same problem.

You don't say how many miles you have on your bike BUT before investing in a switch I recommend you ride your bike around and get the fluids hot. Then pull the plug on your tranny and drain it completely. Take a careful look at the grit in the oil and clean off the plug. If lots of grit is coming out, remove the neutral switch as well and wipe it off with new fluid and reinstall it. Then run another quart thru until the drain side is clear, replace the drain plug, add the final quart.

Once everything is secure, go for a ride. You should be able to find neutral and "see the light again." Shifting will be much smooother as well.
