burley shocks
« on: August 19, 2012, 01:18:02 PM »

So I was wondering if there is any feedback on burley shocks.  I trid the progressive shocks and thought ther felt better than the 12"air shocks but they hit the fender and the latest claims are that the burleys are travel limited  so they wont hit the fender does anyone know if that's true or have any experience in general.
thanx

I have never heard of burley shocks so i can't give you a review of them.

This thread has a photo and info on some great shocks and service.

The only Burly shocks I've ever seen are from their "Slammer" kits, and they are only 10.5 inches long.  So yes, if that's what you are talking about they are definitely travel limited.  Odds are the tire would rub the fender and tear up the wiring, the bike would ride like pure crap, and the handling would suck as well.

What size were the Progressives and what exactly hit the fender?  If you used the right shocks for the application and installed them correctly, neither the shocks nor the tire should have hit the fender. :nixweiss:  I assume you're still talking about a 2003 RG.

yes those are the shocks but they are available by them selves now but they claim they won't hit the fender or wiring but I was hoping to hear from someone who has tried them.
thanks

The progressives were 11.5 and on my way to sturgis I hit a dip in the road and it rubbed the nut the the seat bolts into and knocked it off replaced it with a pan head bolt so it would be more rounded. never hit the harness.

yes those are the shocks

10.5" shocks on a touring bike is a bad idea.  Don't waste your time, your money or your sore ass and back.

Kind of what I figured.  You need to stick with the 12" or longer shocks if you don't want anything to rub, and there is no way a 10.5" shock isn't going to let the tire rub if a 11.5" shock does, unless they made it solid so it won't compress.  That crap is sold for looks, not function.  Do yourself a big favor and forget Burly.

yes I did more looking at it and thinnk I will remove my harley 12" air shocks and replaced them with some heavy duty ones that have 176lbf cause the 156  stock one don't feel as  comfortable and firm as I would like for me and my wife  I am a big guy so  I founde some on ebay the will work better for me.
