How to wire the Zumo 660
« on: September 03, 2012, 02:56:50 PM »

OK, I know this topic has been kicked around many of times.  I think I've read all the posts/threads regarding how to wire the GPS harness for the Zumo 660.  From what I gather, most folks are bypassing how the instructions indicate how to wire the harness (along the handlebar - obviously for a handlebar mount -, through the fairing, running it under the tank, down to the fuse box and making the appropriate connections there for power and ground), opting rather to find a power source at the cig lighter or on the back of the headlight.  I'm assuming a good ground can be found in the fairing as well?

Given my lack of knowledge about electricity and my bike ('12 SESG), it sounds like a huge ordeal to pull the tank, route the harness through the fairing, down the frame and then connect to the fuse box.  Am I right? I would rather wire it in the fairing than going through all that other hassle.

Any advice on the best, easiest way to wire this would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Taking the power from the cig lighter is fine, and you can use the earth on the lighter too (though there are plenty earths inside the fairing in any case)

Just installed the wiring for my Zumo 660 on my 03 SERK.
I have the HD Chrome Zumo 660 Handlebar mount.
Very short run under handlebars, only 2 wire ties on clutch cable.
Into the nacelle and run under the console.
Into the FuseBox, empty circuit.
The Mic and Headphones jack are tucked in under seat between Aft end tank and fwd end seat.
Very easy to access and do not show, if not being used. I use my Wireless BlueTooth SENA SPH10H setup.

If you use a HD Power Point of a Kuryaky Cigarette Lighter etc, that Zumo Mount Power Plugin is "Always Hot"
By going to the Fuse Panel, my Garmin Turns On/Off with the SERK's Ignition Switch

It's really not a big deal to remove the tank but you have to know what you're doing.  I use the Iron Ace mount for Road Glide's so mine is mounted on the dash.  I have the 665 so I mounted my GPS antenna inside the faring on top of the radio.  Mine is wired directly to my battery.  It took me about hour to complete the entire job.

It was easier to simply remove two nuts and lift up the dash on top of the tank.
Ran the wire/wires usingthe same wire clips as the HD Wiring clusters.

Buy using the Fuse block for power, my gps mount in Cold when Ignition is off vs Always On when attached to the battery.
