Starting Issuses!!!!
« on: September 03, 2012, 10:18:58 PM »

Ever since I have owned my 07 Ultra Classic SE it has had occasional issues about cranking. I have told the guys at my dealership and they checked the battery , starter and etc. and said all was ok. But it was not OK....
Recently one of the younger guys at the shop said he new what was wrong. He said that Harley had came out with a new SE compensator which should take care of the problem. I told him to order it and he did and as soon as we made our trip back from Sturgis , I called and set up appt to have it installed.
Problems are now finally over at last. Before and at random when cranking it would seem as if the engine had so much torque that it would kick back or that the starter did not have enough power to kick get it started, but now it cranks as a normal bike. I have owned  this bike since 09 and had this issue @ random and never knew when this absurd noise wud take place and it was very embarrassing to have a CVO and everyone look at you when firing her up...
Harley had  an issue with the old one and  redesigned a new SE Compensator and this so far has taken care of the problem , So if you had the same issue as I this is probably what is wrong. See your local HD dealer and ask them if this will help yours... Parts were $249 and labor was $200 . Yes , this is something that Harley should have taken care of themselves but that's as I Say chit Happens........ Hope this helps!!!!!

Was the sound like grinding noise?  I have an 08 and it does the same thing,as you say randomly.  I go to start it and it seems like there's not enough juice to turn the motor over.  The dealer says it could be a low battery, but I keep a tender on it and even when I'm riding for a while it will do it, however, randomly.

07 FLHRSE3 here that just started not starting. Turn the switch on push the starter and wait for the lite to go off ond hit the starter and nothing doesn't turn over nothing. It even shut off when I hit 3rd gear the other day, just died. When I pulled over it wouldn't start. I turned it off and on maybe 6 or 7 times and it started. I rode it yesterday and it didn't do it. I'm wanting to go on a 600 mile ride tomorrow and unless we can get this figured out I'm going to have to cancel. Any help would be appreciated

Took me two years to get HD to fix it.

Had the same starting issues: an occasional grinding noise on an 08 SE Road King. Eventually went through 6 starter drives and 1 starter motor  assy. Problem was the the ACR indicator light said the acr's were actuated and they were closed causing the starter to crank against full compression motor thus shortening the starters' life.

Those grinding noises were very embarrassing especially on a CVO.. Mine sounded like the starter drive was not meshing with the flywheel, terrible sound but again did this randomly . They had also checked my acr's and said they were opening properly, mine did not have a light. I replaced one starter drive and last year replaced the battery that had been on it since it was new.
Mine also sounded like the starter nor battery had enough power or torque to start an engine with that much compression... I Don't won't to jinx myself but I am so happy to hear this baby crank the way she should.. It did remedy mine..  Good Luck.... :apple:

Occasional grinding on my older FLHR was a sign of the starter clutch going out.  That's the one-way gear train between the actual starter and jack shaft.
